who is at the helm of Pentax?

As a Pentaxian, this past week has been very frustrating.

I had NEVER seen, a large company, with so much to gain, and after years of design and development by it's hard working employees.... allow marketing dept. to F$#& this up so bady....
  • How/Who decided on the price of K-5?
  • Is DPR in charge of your pricing?
  • We still don't know what the price of K-5 is !!!!
  • Do you have any one to proof read the press releases ?
  • Is 645D coming to US or not?
  • Who the hell approved those stupid "grade school level" videos?

Who is in charge? People SHOULD lose their jobs over this.

At least, put out a clarification on dates and prices, to save face

While I agree, the whole ordeal is a piss off, poor insight on PENTAX to just poop out another camera and seemingly walk away while still steaming to attract attention by itself. That said, I still plan to buy it. If I was nonethewiser I'd get a D7000 instead.

$1599 at Henrys.ca here in Canada, $1,279.99 for the D7000.

Mike Johnston of The Online Photographer says:

Despite what you may have read on other sites, availability of the Pentax 645D medium-format digital camera in the United States has NOT been confirmed yet. I have that straight from Pentax USA.

We'll keep you posted on the real situation.

In the U.S., Jimmy Hoffa is in charge because he is easier to find than Ned.

The US Dollar is too weak, the Yen is too strong... So now it's payback time. Now we in Europe are getting the good deals!

1- Yes, Mike Johnston says, the Pentax USA has said the 645D US availability news is NOT accurate.
2. Amazon having both K-5, and K-5 kit at the SAME price of $1600
3. People here in the forums say, the reps at the show mentioned $1,400 price for US
4. Yen value is no different for Nikon or Pentax... yet we see a WIDE discrepancy in the difference of prices between Europe and US

It feels to me, someone (in Pentax) wants to kill the new products before they hit the street.

Pentax right now is on auto-pilot. No one is at the helm.

Generally, pricing is finalized at the time of release, since the market is so competitive. Anything you have heard about finalized pricing is from people who don't know what the street price will be.
I think I read a few days ago that the camera was scheduled for release mid October.

Take a pill your blood pressure is too high.

They had a lot of time to finalise the camera. Almost one year and a half from the last camera. They had the body from K7, is not like they did an entire new camera from scratch.

Only excuse I could think of is : maybe they got the sensor very late compared to Nikon and they didn't expected the Nikon camera to have such good specs and low price.

But that doesn't excuse their lack of communications and the fact that all the Pentax people from Europe and US seem lost in the sea. And the Japanese are in vacation or something like that.

The Japanese vacation schedule might just be a factor. It's "Silver week" here. Both Monday and Thursday were holidays. And Obon was a month ago, a week when Tokyo effectively shuts down.

But then, all of the other manufacturers are Japanese as well.

I personally think the company is run by engineers and accountants who don't understand marketing at all, which would explain everything imho.

+1

And this is a issue with *many* smaller companies.
