It was HUGE!!!

Not sure what the crowd numbers were but current estimates are running around 150,000. The Mall was FULL between Madison and Jefferson Drives from 3 1/2 St (approx location of the stage) all the way out to 7th St. Beyond 7th St the crowd was confined to the areas under the trees because the central lawns are all blocked off to protect the grass). Crowds in these trees extended all the way to 12th St. Beyond that there were still thousands of people heading east along the edges. 7th St was also wall to wall people between Penn Ave and the Mall itself as late as 2pm.

Metro was a CRUSH both going in and going out.

Photos to come.

Mike

I watched the whole rally on Comedy Central and was quite moved. It was very well done and the "take it down a notch" attitude was really in the air. Someone called it the Woodstock of Politics and that statement seems to fit. Just a nice civil three hours in Washington and as I understand it, there were satellite rallies all across the country. I'm not a good judge of crowds, but there were certainly a lot of people there.

One of my favorite segments...Cat Stevens to Ozzie to the OJ's. Classic. Father Guido Sarducci giving the benediction was also outstanding.

In the end though, Jon Stewart's speech at the close was what this rally was all about.

Larry,

Well said. I couldn't have put it better myself. +rep for you!

I do have one question though - does anyone wonder if Stephen Colbert knows all the words to crazy train?

CBS News is estimating 215,000, based on AirPhotoLive.com's aerial photos. Based on this photo I am going to amend the extent where the crowd filled the entire width of the mall. This shows wall to wall people at least out to 9th St. (based on the location of the Carosel (visible in lower right)). I suspect either the Park Police opened up that section of the lawn or the attendees opened it themselves once the rest of the mall became oversaturated.

Jon Stewart Rally Attracts Estimated 215,000 - Political Hotsheet - CBS News

CBS News also commissioned AirPhotosLive.com to do a crowd estimate of Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally in August. That rally was estimated to have attracted 87,000 people. Amid criticism from conservatives that the estimate was low, CBS News detailed the methodology behind it here.

Will there be a gallery to post to? I was there. Mostly have pictures of signs. Was between the 1st first aid station and in front of the second set of jumbo-trons to the right. Very restricted to movement due to packed crowd. Stayed to take pictures at night too.

I actually suspect there was a subtle point in there.

Also, +1 for Larry's post.

It was really heartening to see people come out for that. Stewart's speech at the end ....Actually represents so many people in America, the which we haven't heard from in too long.

I got to the rally at like 2 pm, since the metro was soooo backed up. At the W Falls Church Station, people were on the platform from 10 am. I ended up just driving and parking in DC. However, everyone was pretty chill. It's crazy how the traffic was so bad, and the lines for the trains were so long, and everyone pretty much kept their cool, and were very polite.

Also, there, I heard the most interesting debate on what is more dangerous, bears or bulls...

Since this is a one time event I think it's best just to post your favorite shots in the Post Your Photos forum.

Some fun signs....... we need photos...

But a large number also had explicitly liberal messages, often criticizing the tea party, Republican politicians and Fox News:
"Only amnesiacs vote Republican,"
"A little socialism is good for your health" (with a Canadian flag),
"We have nothing to fear but Fox itself,"
"America, it's worth it: Stop whining and pay your taxes."

Hamilton Jones, 41, a video editor from Somerville, Mass., started out criticizing the media for focusing on conflict at the expense of substance. "Jon Stewart is the only person who's pointing out the hypocrisy of what the government is doing and what the media is doing," he said.

But he also complained that the Democrats have been too passive. "I don't think the Democrats are really willing to stand up for their message. If you believe in something like health care, you should go out and explain why you're doing it, and be loud," Jones said.

More photos of the crowd from the Huffington Post.

This one would be from just to the right of the stage (looking out) and clearly shows the incredible density of the crowd.

Must have been on a media crane...

It's also looking like the 215,000 estimate was low as regards total people who came in for the rally. It's becoming evident that many many many people who came in for the rally could not actually get to the Mall (evidenced by reports of streets jammed with pedestrians for blocks and blocks around the Mall) and by Metro's ridership estimates (as reported in the Washington Post )

QuoteQuote:
Metro sets a record. Thanks to the Rally to Restore Sanity/Keep Fear Alive event -- Metro set a ridership record on Saturday with more than 850,000 people using the transit system. (On a regular Saturday, ridership around 320,000.) But the day was not without problems. Four people were injured when an escalator malfunctioned at the L'Enfant Plaza station and there were complaints about jammed packed cars and stations.
And these numbers are likely low since there are new reports that are saying that metro workers opened the turnstiles at many stations to speed the crowds entrance and exit.

Mike

p.s. one person made the following analysis on a WaPo coments page...

QuoteQuote:
Let the numbers speak for themselves.

According to Metro, there were 825,437 on Stewart/Colbert day and 510,020 on Beck day. Average Saturday ridership is about 350,000 (both events were on Saturday).

Even if you exclude the average daily riders, and assume two trips per person (one there, one back), that yields 80,010 for Beck and 237,718 for Stewart/Colbert.

This method corresponds to APL’s analysis of 87,000 for Beck and 215,000 for Stewart/Colbert. Thus, at a minimum, it seems fair to conclude from the data that Stewart/Colbert drew three times as many as Beck.

Metro - Rail - Disruption Reports - Daily Service Information Beck's Rally

Metro - About Metro - News - Metro sets new record for highest Saturday Metrorail ridership Colbert/Stewart Rally

Wish I could have seen/heard some of that. I hope they replay it all. I missed the whole thing because I was there and there was no getting within a quarter mile of hearing distance. Lol. But I got some pictures of funny signs!!
