Thanks Tom but that's not what I wanted - I was just making a point of how maltreated WE are as Pentax users - even by Microsoft.

I happen upon the local Camera Club today and apart from the fact they have a DEAD Forum they don't have a Pentax section.

They wouldn't have done that in the 60s and 70s - would they!!!

Obviously MS is stuck with version 1.0, which was published 12/16/2005.
We should be honest and admit, that in these almost two years Pentax has evolved a lot and MS for sure WOULD have included it in newer releases.

Best regards

Before Vista came out we beat this subject to death. The MS-RAW viewer support was disontinued in mid 2006 when MS came out with WIC (Windows Image Components). WIC is built into Vista and is not nor will it ever be supported on XP.

RAW-Viewer only supported N*kon and C*non - because they were the only camera companies who would work with MS. There was a long discussion on DPR about this and a guy in MS (working on digital imaging - and he is a Pentax user) came out and said Pentax did not return MS's requests for infomation.

That said - in order to see Pentas PEF thumbnails and use the image media parts of Vista you need to load the Pentax codec - which is available on the Pentax site. The idea of using codec's takes MS out of the "gotta go out and update some other companies interface again" business - and puts the focus on the equipment manufactures where it belongs. (Pentax was very late in getting its codec out - I don't think that Adobe has released its codec for DNG yet either - it was supposed to be out "real soon now")

There are third party products that let you see PEF's in the file system (explorer) on XP, but you will never see them by default. Heck you don't see them by default on Vista either. XP is beyond its expected life cycle - minimal work going into "adding" new things, just fix the vulnerabilities. Vista is where the MS world is now. Remeber XP's RAW viewer will not see the newer models of N*kon and C*non either. And what about Oly*pus, F*ji and S*ny - no support for them either.
