House Intelligence Committee

The rise of the new McCarthyism......
First a bit of history.. remember history????
McCarthyism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

QuoteQuote:
Bachmann once suggested that Congress should investigate whether Democratic lawmakers were pro- or anti-America, and she's been a cable TV favorite because she's known for colorful sound bites.

Members of the Intelligence panel receive classified briefings in a secure conference room in the Capitol, and are sworn to secrecy about most of the committee's activities.

"If you're looking for media and controversy, that's not the committee to be on," said a Republican familiar with the discussions about Bachmann's appointment.

Bachmann, on her Facebook page, said she was "honored to have been selected by Speaker-designate John Boehner to serve on the House Intelligence Committee. As a mother of five biological children and 23 foster children I pledge to do whatever I need to do to keep your family, my family, and the United States safe from harm."

What was bone head thinking........

History huh.........

QuoteQuote:
Mass hysteria has reared its ugly head for as long as humans have existed. Adolf Hitler worked enough people into a frenzy to justify the murder of millions of Jews. Jesus Christ, known by all as peaceful, if controversial, was brutally nailed to a cross because a few high-ranking officials felt threatened by him. Although one would hope that people would learn a lesson or two from the mistakes of the past, it seems that history, as the old cliché goes, is forever doomed to repeat itself. Enter Senator Joseph McCarthy. While he may not have caused genocide or murdered a prophet, he was able to whip up hysteria in America in the early 1950s. McCarthy's issue of choice? Communism. The American Heritage Dictionary defines McCarthyism as "the political practice of publicizing accusations of disloyalty or subversion with insufficient regard to evidence."

QuoteQuote:
Imagine 25 FBI agents coming to your door at 7:00 in the morning and staying for ten hours and then leaving with 30 boxes of your belongings.
Well, Joe Iosbaker and Stephanie Weiner don’t have to imagine it.
Because, on Sept. 24, the FBI descended on their home.
The FBI agents at their home even went through their son’s T-shirt drawer and separated “those that were controversial from those that weren’t.”
At one point, the agent in charge was called in to evaluate one of the shirts because it said “Hell Boy” on it, Weiner recalls.
And they took “a gift our son had just given us from a trip to China he was on, which was paid for by the State Department,” she adds.
Iosbaker and Weiner were among 14 solidarity activists and socialists whose places the FBI raided in an astonishing assault on our First Amendment rights to freedom of speech and freedom of assembly.
The pretext was that activists were “providing material support” or “attempting to provide material support” or “conspiring to provide material support” to groups that are listed by the State Department as terrorists.
But the ones the FBI seemed concerned about had nothing to do with Al Qaeda. No, they had to do with groups in Colombia and Palestine, two places that Iosbaker and Weiner have never been.
Weiner says they haven’t been providing material support, either, unless “providing falafel” counts as that.

You have to love American politics. I went to the first integrated summer camp in the US south, in Georgia, the Clan bombed our front gate, burned a cross on our lawn and poisoned the pond we used for a swimming hole. You'll note the clan has somehow never been branded as a terrorist organization, even though they pretty much wrote the book on the tactics of terror. We moved to HIghlander folk school in the middle of the night on a few old army trucks. Later the Highlander Folk School was burned to the ground by Tennessee State troopers after it was declared "Un-American" by Senator McCarthy and his lackeys. It's crime? It had held a conference in which one of the invited speakers was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., someone completely vilified as a communist by the right wingers of the day.

After all of this, the right wingers still think they had something to do with the lack of popularity of communism in the American left. Fact is, it had nothing do with them. It was the abuses of Stalin, and the realization, that the allies of communism were not the American left, but the American right. Think about it, security through violence, totalitarianism, the persecution of one's political allies, incarceration of large portions of the population, the American right has way more in common with communism of Stalin than the American left ever did.

ADDENDUM: Another "New McCartyism"..........
http://www.examiner.com/muslim-in-san-francisco/congressman-king-s-new-mccarthyism
QuoteQuote:
King writes, “Federal and local law enforcement officials throughout the country told me they received little or - in most cases - no cooperation from Muslims.” Yet, a recent study from the Muslim Public Affairs Council says almost forty percent of al-Qaida-related terror plots since September 11, 2001 were thwarted with the help of the Muslim community.

Some of King’s particularly bigoted statements include, in 2003 he claimed “there are too many mosques in the US.” In 2004 he claimed that the vast majority of the American Muslim community leaders are “an enemy living amongst us.” And he once claimed that 80 - 85% of mosques in this country are controlled by Islamic fundamentalists. “ Salam Al-Marayati, the Executive Director of the Muslim Public Affairs Council said "He basically wants to treat the Muslim-American community as a suspect community."

The thought of Michelle Bachmann on the House Intelligence Committee, with her history of shooting her mouth off on a long range of subjects, is frightening. Whether conservative or liberal isn't the issue here. She's a bad choice. I don't think she's capable of keeping her mouth shut.

I'm *really* hoping this go-round doesn't have to repeat itself *too* exhaustively.
