Originally posted by reeftool While we can argue as to who signed what bill into law or which party overspent on what, both the Democrats and Republicans share equal blame overall. My main gripe with the Republican party is they paint themselves as the economic saviors of the country and in reality, their record for deficit spending is as bad or worse than the Democrats. The only difference is what it is spent on. The Republicans like to wrap themselves in the flag and make excuses saying that deficit spending is acceptable when "national security" is involved. They haven't caught on to the reality that deficit spending to the extent is has grown to is in itself a threat to national security.
Think about it. Our economy is based on deficit spending. The real cause of the recession has been centered around credit. Tighten up on credit and look what happened in the fall of 08. All it took was a Hurricane and an insurance company that didn't have the resources to pay out it's claims to bring the country to the brink of economic collapse.
Not to mention a horribly costly war which (in the case of Iraq)
does not even look like it was motivated by national security in the first place....
