I don't understand this whole controversy.

To me, it's pretty obvious that his parents weren't ever married, and marital status does indeed show up on birth certificates.

Not sure about EVERY state, but pretty sure--especially for his age. Maybe not in the last 20 years, but prior to that, yes.
