As Gene notes, this isn't necessarily a great motivator past a certain point.
Consider the results of using fear as a motivator: you tend to get timid people unwilling to risk consequences of independent thought or action, you get a lot of dithering and 'politburo reading' in order to figure out the safest opinion/action...
When you are afraid for your bonus, your job, your insurance on average your behavior in the corporation will be different than if these did not loom as large. Mind, you'd still be motivated by promotion and esteem, and the size of your bonus would still be important to you.
I don't think business has overthrown Maslow.
