don't let renters vote

You know this would be funny if people weren't so dead serious lately.....

Here’s a new Tea Party plank: Don’t let renters vote.

Gawker reported that Judson Phillips, president of prominent Tea Party group Tea Party Nation, has a terrific idea: “The Founding Fathers… put certain restrictions on… the right to vote… you had to be a property owner. And that makes a lot of sense.”

Here’s the full quote, from Tea Party Nation Radio:

“The Founding Fathers originally said, they put certain restrictions on who gets the right to vote. It wasn’t you were just a citizen and you got to vote. Some of the restrictions, you know, you obviously would not think about today. But one of those was you had to be a property owner. And that makes a lot of sense, because if you’re a property owner you actually have a vested stake in the community. If you’re not a property owner, you know, I’m sorry but property owners have a little bit more of a vested interest in the community than non-property owners.”

Republicans have always had a fondness for the past. But, do we really want to jump right back to the Middle Ages?

Nah. It sounds like the Tea Party would settle for the 18th Century.

"Citizen Elf"
‘Experienced citizen’ Gingrich: Power to the people in 2012 | Post on Politics
QuoteQuote:
Later, he added: “Any person who runs for president in this cycle and offers that they will change things fundamentally misunderstands America. The presidency’s not big enough, it’s not powerful enough….We’re the most decentralized country in the history of the world and that is a good thing because it disperses power closer to the people.”

He also offered this tea partyish take on the upcoming election:

“We should pick up the presidency as part of a wave of change in which the American people decide that we the people are going to re-center our country, we the people are going to end 80 years of the New Deal majority, we are going to create a center-right governing majority for a generation or more and we’re going to fundamentally change the values, the principles and the institutions which have governed us for the last 80 years. And to do that we the people have to be active citizens from your local neighborhood to your voluntary organization to your city and state and county government. And finally the federal government should know its appropriate role.

“But this election should be about we the people, not just about the presidency.”
Opp's..Citizen Newt........ not sure which one sounds stupider......

Indeed, the original founding fathers did give the vote solely to land owners. But eventually they and their successors saw that this eliminated all non whites (male and female), effectively creating the same thing they were trying to get away from: taxation without representation.

It just shows if you look hard enough on the web, you can always find someone with questionable thought processes.

I hate to burst the idiots bubble but how many people in America actually own the property outright? I mean debt free because even though you may "own" a house and pay mortgage payments you don't actually own it till the loan is payed off. I wonder if this guy has a mortgage on his house if he does then as far as I am concerned he falls into the rent to own category and shouldn't be allowed to vote either.

It'd never happen: do you know what that'd do to advertising prices?

Great idea. You would have the boardrooms of the banks deciding who is going to be President.

Well, the more the GOP gets their way, the more they need to stack the deck against regular people to seem 'populist.' If everyone *in* this country voted, they'd have become a dim memory twenty years ago.
