My god--I've never seen anything so monstrously devastating.

the Philippines has been struck. Manila (through AlJazeera) is reporting that the tsunami wave was much smaller and less damaging than initially thought. people may be able to return to their homes within hours. my thoughts are of course still with Japan.

There are now reports coming out that this quake had 30+ the strength of the one that wiped out Tokyo in 1923. 10 meter tsunamis, buildings on fire as far away as Tokyo. The media have labeled it the worst quake in Japanese history. I've seen footage of people fleeing the buildings in Tokyo. Having just come back from living there for five years, I can say that not only is that something I've never seen, it's downright amazing--the Japanese don't pause in talking or meals for the usual ~5 quakes.

Here's some useful English-language coverage. Sorry about the ad at the beginning, it's worth watching.

I just read the news 1/2 hour ago (4:30am PST) and saw a couple clips. This is awful! The propagation forecast above is daunting. Hawai'i should be getting the first surge around now; it will reach San Francisco in three hours. This is a stark reminder that our petty human concerns and squabbles are swamped by planetary physics. My sympathies to all those suffering from this.

Incredible - all those poor folks who perished. As Dave says, our prayers go out.

Holy Mother, ..the radio reports really couldn't describe this one.

Head for high ground, coastal people! Here's hoping they get those fires under control, those look scary.

A friend of mine arrived in Tokyo just one day ago. Her husband finally got through after several hours -- no phone no internet. (Can you imagine waiting?) She is fine but entire neighbourhoods are trashed.

I'd just got on a train when the quake struck.
I was between Kichijoji and Nishi Ogikubo Western Tokyo.

Felt what was a bump in the tracks and it seemed as if the train jumped slightly.
The train driver pulled up and the big one hit.
The whole train rocked like a small boat in a storm.
Now, these tracks are elevated above the streets by 20 or 30 feet or so.

The after shocks were as fierce as the actual quake itself.
Must have been on the train for about 30-45 minutes, but it seemed like hours.
Eventually, as the after shocks ran their course, we were evacuated and walked along the tracks to the next station.

I must add, that the Japanese commuters on the train were incredibly calm.
This was a situation where we couldn't get off the train, and I went through a massive sense of helplessness and we were made to guess what would happen.
There was lots of sighs and lots of murmers, but no screams and hysterics.
On the streets, thousands and thousands of people were forced towalk or catch a taxi.
They all went about their business excellently.
The rescue services who got us off the train were great.
