10 !!! I'll NEVER need more than 10 ....

We have had several threads about what some us remember (8 Tracks, B&W TV, etc...) but here's one that just recently reared it's head.

About 6 years ago or earlier I bought a SonicWall TX170 (Wired router I used for a Tunnel to a client site) with a 10 node license. I thought to myself - I will never have more than 10 devices consecutively connected to the internet...

Fast Forward to March 2011 - I was troubleshooting my son's IPhone inability to connect to our Wi-Fi ... after a while I checked into the router and ... sure enough - Max License Exceeded ....

With two young adults still at home we have :

6 Computers
3 IPhones
1 Ipad
1 IP Phone
1 Printer
1 Itouch

Still to be connected

2 Blu-Ray Players
1 Satillite TV receiver

Nuked the Tz170 - bought a new Netgear n300 Wirless Router to replace the aging Linksys Wrtg we had.... now I am good for at leat 3 or 4 more years Hopefully by then these young adults will spread their wings and fly fly ....

So how many devices have you got ?

Well, everyone has 1 desktop and 1 laptop so that's six there. Wife has a blackberry, iphone for my daughter, tracfone for me. All our printers are slaved, tv is broadcast only and our pets are all analog so that's it I guess.

Eh, every time I think we're high-tech or something...

Still got a few Ethernet cords running around the house.

Got one (1) phone/DSL/cable line running into this remote mountain abode, out of cell range. Phone line gets split to four jacks feeding two-each wired and wireless phone rigs. DSL line goes to DSL modem and then a 4-jacks+WiFi router. Router feeds three (3) wired laptops and one (1) mini-desktop in my office, and a couple wireless laptops scattered about the house. Cable line feeds one big-screen setup in my other's room -- I don't watch it. No Bluetooth. No cell service here. No wireless cameras, security systems, intercoms. Maybe I should give webcams and analogue synth their own URL's? No stray WiFi from the neighbors, they're too far away. I have yet to wire the deer, squirrels, turkeys, foxes, skunks, bears, pumas, mantids that wander about. I feel so primitive... At least there's a fibre-optic cable buried under our mucky gravel road, currently buried under 1m of snow.

I guess I'm in the minority in that my kids flew away and we only have 2 computers hooked to our wired ethernet router. They still come around from time to time and hit Dad up for money. My son in law said our old 20 inch TV should be an embarrassment. I said we hardly watch it anyhow and if he was that concerned that the grandkids would be properly entertained when they came over, then a new TV would make a find Christmas present. I guess it's not that embarrassing after all.

Ye gods, you didn't have NAT on that thing (so you'd only have one IP for hte whole house)? Our ISP used to count connections too, but as far as they knew we had only one

As far as what we have, hmmm.

8 computers (6 ours, 2 work) - 1 netbook, 4 desktops, 3 laptops
1 IPad
3 IPod touches
1 Wii
1 wireless printer

Back to topic. My first router was actually a software router.

Sustainable Softworks - IPNetRouter - Internet Sharing - Software Router

It was so cool to share a dial-up connection over a LocalTalk (PhoneNet) network.

Replaced that with a hardware router, can't remember the brand. Replaced that with a Netgear wireless router. Currently serving a Mac mini, G4 tower, G3 iMac, G3 iBook, Beige G3, Quadra 605, iPod touch, HP OfficeJet 6000.

Well, I can remember when the first 10 MB hard drive hit the market. Nobody could ever imagine needing that much storage.
