Obituary of a great Pentaxian..

Grannis photographs documented California surf culture of the 1960s and '70s. His images helped popularize and immortalize the sport -- and the life behind it -- at a crucial point in its history. "His photos captured the real thing," wrote surfing journalist Steve Barilotti. He was 93.

Hats off to a Legend....Info courtesy L.A. Times.

Big, fast lens . . . pan head . . . extended post.

Just proves an artist can produce great images with modest gear.

It was his photos in Surfing magazine that ignited my interest in photography. I posted a thread a few weeks back. I'm glad I'm not the only fan.

It looks to me as though his mount is way undersized.

If this was really his working rig perhaps he shot mostly in bright daylight and could control vibration with fast shutter speeds and his relatively fast lens.

Still without a gimbal mount tracking moving subjects with that much glass would have been a pain in the a**.

I wonder if this wasn't some kind of promo shot.

For years, the surfing magazines were filled with his photos so whatever his tripod setup was, it worked.

I wonder if the first shot on this post was just a quick setup shot and not really what he actually used when we was an active photographer. Notice he is an elderly man in this shot long after he gave up active photography.

This looks more realistic to me.

Yeah, ...all I can think is maybe he's just using that tripod to take the weight and otherwise shooting fairly freehand.
