Thank you for revisiting this. It was a clear campaign difference between several candidates vs. Obama--and it came back to my mind immediately after Obama's announcement.
The gist of the issue during the campaign was to paint Obama as an innocent that did not know foreign policy--an thus it was claimed to be a weakness of his. Several candidates jumped-on this bandwagon as I recall.
Clearly Obama had conviction and was being as straight-forward with American voters as any candidate I can remember--since it was an unpopular (amongst candidates at the time).
Only the fullness of time will tell, but it seems Obama was not only courageous, but right then and now--and the political crows are feasting today.
