This is how the pros do it (bird photo)

This photo was in my local paper today. They were weighing and banding birds and I thought this must be how everyone gets those super close-ups.

No. That is how biologists do it. Pros take pictures of biologists taking pictures of birds.

It can certainly be said that some images are staged or poised. Trained birds or birds held captive. But there are certainly photographers who spend hours in camouflage in the elements and various surroundings getting the images that look like they were achieved easily.

I was at an event last winter called Raptorfest where several bird handlers had their birds on display. I got some good close ups. I normally think of falcons and there were a few but some of the people had several varieties of owls and hawks also and all offered private photo sessions. That is how many of these folks make a living.

I saw a guy taking pictures of birds a few days ago who had full camoflage, the camera ( A Canon ) had been camo'd, the huge lens was camo, and he was dressed in camo from head to foot. He even had camo paint on his face and hands.

He was sat in a bright red car poking the lens out of the window, with the engine running to keep warm !

Oddly enough, quite a few birds are habituated to cars and you can use them as blinds. I guess if they see something that doesn't look like it has legs, arms, teeth or a gun barrel, then they ignore it. Heck, I've driven right up to some Pacific Golden Plovers in a parking lot and they just stood there until I got out of my car and shooed them out of danger.

That's one way here's another...

Actual shots taken with this setup at about 30-40 feet.
