Tornado touches down in downtown SPRINGFIELD, Mass

QuoteQuote:
A tornado has touched down in Downtown Springfield and headed toward the city's South End and East Longmeadow.

The tornado had crossed the Connecticut River from Agawam and West Springfield into the city, crossing the Connecticut River and Interstate 91.

There are also reports of additional tornadoes touching down in Wilbraham and in Agawam. Wilbraham Police called 22News to warn people living in the south side of town about the tornado danger.

The 22News Springfield Skycam captured images of the Springfield tornado as it crossed the river, as well as downed trees at Riverfront Park in Springfield.

Traffic on the Memorial Bridge is heavily backed-up. A tractor trailer had overturned there.

22News is at Main and Union Streets in the South End, where there is damage to buildings, including the collapse of the top stories of a building on Main Street and as well as downed trees. 22News is continuing to follow reports of damages. There was also a report of a gas leak on Main Street near the Red Rose Pizzeria.

There are no confirmed deaths at this time.

Of *that* sort, yes. They do happen more than you would think, but not like that kind of pattern...

Nah. This ain't 'angry.' Just very, very, disappointed. (And that one was so close to home, I don't mind saying so. )

Let's not make our Momma cry, now.

That line of storms moved through here a couple of hours earlier and they were nasty then. Looks like they got worse.

So, I wonder if we'll start hearing from folks who were closer by to one of these: I called my looks pretty bad in some spots: another 'hundred year' storm system. We'd get tornadoes in New Endland once in a while, but usually not like this (Usually they'd be so embedded in storms you wouldn't see them even when they were passing pretty nearby, till someone'd find the damage in the morning.

This was about a ten minute drive from my house. I watched it live via a streaming local news station as it happened and it was unreal. Unreal as in I know exactly where it is know people there and can't believe it was happening.

I have not been to the area as they have said it is a mess and if you don't have to do go there. While it sounds like only 2 confirmed deaths it could have been so much worse. Many schools had already cleared out for the day and at least 4 schools suffered major damage and again luckily most where relatively empty.

There are many videos And the local papers site has a small collection here on this page WARNING IN MOST OF THE VIDEOS THERE IS VERY BAD LANGUAGE: Videos of the tornadoes that devastated Springfield and other Western Massachusetts communities on June 1, 2011 | masslive.com

I shot video about 20 or 30 minutes before the tornado hit (again about 10-15 miles south of me) with my iPhone

Then later in the evening another band pf storms came throughout. The sky turned a eary yellow and green at times. Luckily no other tornados at that time but I shot some with the K5 of the sky

I may go into the area at some point and get some photos and will share. Focus on helping anyone I can as that is what is needed.
