Canadian Postal Strike

My wife just told me she read that the Canada Post is shut down due to a strike.

Is this true?

If so, how will this affect any transactions between us in the US and Canada?

We've been experiencing rotating strikes (one or two cities across the country every day) which was mildly disruptive, I honestly did not notice a slowdown in my mail... Canada post is already so slow, a day or two more for a delivery isn't going to make a huge difference.

In their infinite wisdom Canada Post management locked out their employees in retaliation and shut down the whole postal system from coast to coast.

So yes, all mail has grounded to a halt thanks to the lockout and yes it affects all international transactions which have to transit tru Canada.

Thanks for that info Pat - all I heard was "strike", but now I see it was indeed a "lock-out" which is a big difference.

I feel for you folks - I am just trying to imagine what the effects would be with all mail grounded for an entire country!

So what do people think? For John Power, not much.

"I get everything done through the banking system. I need to contact anybody I call them on the phone."

When asked how the postal lockout affects him he said, "not at all. I don't write letters to anybody."

Mat Pitcher said, "I do all my work on the computer ... and the mail I get I can do without anyway."

In the long run this lock-out will cost Canada Post a lot.

I used to get all my bills thru the mail, and as long as the rotating strikes were just delaying them a day or two I did not mind. But with the nation wide lock-out management has completely paralyzed the postal system coast to coast and to me thats unacceptable.

So as a result I have signed up for "online billing" and "online statements" for all my utilities, banks, phone, net access... so other than junk mail I'm pretty well "off the grid" when it comes to the postal system.

I suspect this lock-out will have caused many people to like me switch to online paperless everything and most of us will never return to mailed bills.

I'd appreciate updates on this, btw: I've got to get the Sightseeing Screwmount to Canada, next.

Personally, I think the union was smart doing the rotating strikes. Gets the message out, and doesn't put the union in too bad a light. Locking out the workers was a dumb, dumb move, that will only hurt Canadapost in the long run.

Besides, I like getting mail, even if it is dreaded bills.

US post offices will currently not accept mail to Canada until further notice, except for Global Express Guaranteed items.

Was wondering if (when) that was going to happen. Wish I didn't have a package in limbo (to Canada) at the moment

Ironic that the head of Canada Post (who locked out the workers) is named Deepak Chopra...

I'm pretty sure it starts this Monday, if it hasn't already.

Well, the canadian government just passed a special law forcing the locked out workers back on the job so things will start moving again Monday night.
