HALIFAX - Here's a developing story: after two years in a Nova Scotia river, a digital camera retrieved from the icy waters last week yielded up picture perfect images.

Both the camera and pictures were returned to their Halifax owner this past weekend nearly two years to the day after they were lost in a back-country canoe accident.

"The idea that it could work was really astounding. It would have been in that river under ice and snow and freezing for two winters," Bill Collins, the owner of the camera said in a phone interview Wednesday.

"The pictures are perfect. There's absolutely nothing wrong with them."

Collins and his wife Lori were canoeing in Nova Scotia's Kejimkujik National Park in 2005 when they capsized, spilling themselves and their belongings into the frigid Autumn waters of Little River.

I don't see why this can't be true.

I had my kayak swamped, getting water into mi *istD in early 2004. The camera went into all sorts of funny modes, and I had to pull the batteries.

Once I got back to camp, I set it upside down (I assume water entered through the shutter release/power switch, and therfore should exit the same way) and in the sun.

After about 4 hours it was fully dried out and fully functional.

It's never been in for service and has done over 8000 shots.
