It's our vast numbers that is choking the environment. If there were only 4 million of us, instead of 4 billion, then we could ALL drive hummers, eat whale and cut down every tree we stumble upon, without influencing the ecosystem in any way whatsoever.
Have you read Jared's Collapse where he describes at least half a dozen societies that did destroy their ecosystems and therefore themselves and none of them had anywhere near the populations that we do?
There seems to be the concept by some that those of us who care about the planet and the environment must make the choice between living with all of our current excesses or to totally stop using any resource at all. Your last statement has been proven totally wrong even using examples within North American where many of our ecosystems have been severely altered in the past when the Earth's population was only 4 billion.
We need to live smarter lives and use our resources in a more manageable way. And yes the population needs to be curbed and then reduced. All historical evidence shows that when a society becomes more affluent the number of children each family produces drastically falls. In the developed world we need to accelerate the belief within the family that large number of children are not necessary for their survival. But we cannot ignore our responsibility as compare the amount of resources the average North American uses compared to entire families in Africa or parts of Asia and I think it shows very clearly that we are part of the problem and there is no reason that we need to be part of the solution and with our relative wealth and historical use of the resources we have a larger responsibility that those of the third world. It is not up to them to solve our problems for us.
But the choices are not between driving a Hummer or having to walk or having a house that is not occupied during the day but the ac is running making it so cold that when people come home they need to wear sweaters or not living in a house at all. Those are excuses for those who either do not care about the environment or the future of people on this earth or those who think that only poorer people than themselves should fix the problem.
