Television/monitor formats

I have a wide-screen TV like I'm guessing most people do. When switching around between some TV shows and DVDs, there is always the dreaded possibility of having the image format set wrong, i.e., 4:3 or 16:9, so that circles aren't really circular.

Now I've never been bothered by black stripes at the sides or top of the screen and can't understand people who are, so I set the correct format for the image and enjoy.

However what really gets me is people, like my friend with the 50" screen, who have it set to widescreen - all the time - so car wheels are oval and people are wide. I had to watch a football game that looked to have 400-pound players. And to top if off, neither my friend nor his wife knew how to adjust the format with the remote, though with a little experimenting, he found it (though did not correct the format).

I'm sure there is a psychological thesis in there, somewhere.

It's just the modern version of VCR's always flashing 12:00. If it can be switched on, and channels and volume changed, that's all that matters. They don't bother to RTFM. Such is life.

Just out of curiosity: does your friend watch Fox News?
