So I just won 1st place in a local fair!

We have a local fair called the Farm Fair. It was started as just a way for farmers to show off their animals and crops, and has grown and grown and grown. They now do judging for not only crops, but all sorts of stuff, sewing, crafts, fruits, photography, etc. My wife came in 3rd place with her scrapbook last year, so I decided to enter a few photographs this year.
She entered another scrapbook, and won first place this year! Which is awesome.
I was worried because when she dropped off my photos, there were already over 30 photos, and it was only 1 hour into the 5 hour submission window.
I was hoping that I would at least hold a candle to the photos that were there, and not be embarrassed. Turns out, I won 1st place!
Honestly, I was not only very surprised, but surprised of the photo that won. Although I do like it, I didnt think it would be the one to win, (should any of them win)
Here are the two that i submitted. The baby is the photo that won. I honestly thought the Lion would be the won to do good, should either do well.
Oh well. Still awesome in my book!

Well done! I prefer the baby shot too. The Lion shot is commonplace, and obviously in a zoo.

With the baby you've captured something unique, a shot with character, humour, and natural human interest. And it's a one-off. Congrats.

The first is a bit heavy on the green (tinting the rocks), and the second has the emotional subject appeal to make it a winner. Congrats.

Some friends of mine wanted to get some family portraits before the new baby, so I got them over one day. Their daughter was so cute, but so hard to pose, so I kinda let her do her thing. She is a natural, when acting natural lol

I'm very proud of you and happy for you.

As has been said....the lion is commonplace and obviously in a zoo, and perhaps a tad bit over-processed. But that baby shot is simply spectacular. Not only is it spectacular in its own right, it manages to be spectacular in the "Pregnant Mommy's Naked Tummy" subgenre which seems to almost universally slip over the edge into either the trite or the tasteless. You avoided being trite or tasteless, have splendid composition, a complementary uncluttered background, a priceless subject with an adorable expression, and have done a very good job on the post-processing. I don't care for the lion at all, if I may be totally frank here, but I'd give my left nut to be able to say I took the baby shot.

I agree with everything that Mike Cash said.
I am not a fan of prego shots but that one transcends the genre
and is a spectacular photograph. Congratulations!
The lion, well I agree with what Mike says.
