It's not Linux but it is a close cousin. The folks at DistroWatch give BSD an honorable mention even though it's not Linux.

DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD.

It's as wrong as saying Mac OS X, Solaris or HP/UX are close cousins to Linux

FreeBSD has more in common with Linux than it does Solaris or HP-UX. They are both Unix-like while OS X, Solaris and HP-UX are all Unix.

Solaris is SRV4 while HP-UX is System V.

OS X is based on a Mach kernel and parts of BSD Lite. It really should have been called MaCSTEP

What is Mac OS X?

Because some of us use multiple OSes.

According to this poll - nothing - absolutely nothing has changed... In all these years MS still dominates the world as the preferred OS. Apple (the OS) merely remains as a fringe product appealing to fanatics.

I use Windows XP on four PCs. Shouldn't I get four votes?

Perhaps, but one can only wonder how many Mac users run some version of WIN on their Apple box?

It's interesting that Apple felt it needful to enable their platform to also run WIN, while nobody in the PC world felt the need to enable the Mac OS to run on the PC!

The question is "What OS do you use?", and you use WinXP.

Some folks did, and that's why there's Hackintosh.

It's easier for Apple to have Windows run on a Mac, because Windows by it's nature supports a gazillion different hardware configurations. OSX, otoh, is specific in what hardware it supports, and Apple deliberately works to ensure that a "common" PC cannot run OSX.

If this poll favors the votes of those who use multiple OS's it skews the results towards the geeks.
That same demographic should also see nothing wrong with results that total far more than 100%.

Yup.

Some of the other "What is your OS" polls I've participated in specifically ask "What is your Primary OS?" But given that the OP in this case has permitted us to select multiple answers, I guess he looking for more of a "geek factor".
