Fright Night (1982), Labyrinth, Ladyhawke, Cat People (1982), Langella Dracula, Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, and surprisingly because I am not a particularly religious soul, let alone a Christian, Jesus of Nazareth and Quo Vadis.
JON was an incredibly cast film all around and I think Robert Powell was just unbelievably good in the role even if he was the popular artist's image of Christ rather then the likely historically accurate one. I remember seeing that when I was 10 or so for the first time and finally getting why some people might have left everything to go follow him. It was such an incredibly moving portrayal. As for Quo Vadis Leo Genn's Petronius and his slave lady love stole that film right out from under the two main characters so far as I am concerned. I barely remember Robert Taylor and Deborah Kerr or any of the people playing the Christians to be honest. When I watch that one? I watch it for them. That last scene where they commit suicide together at the banquet and Petronius says his peace is one of the best moments in film history as far as I am concerned. An Epic performance in an absolutely stunningly visual period movie.
Fright Night to this day remains a classic. I watch it several times a year and the sequel too. Labyrinth, Bowie as Jareth, one of the most memorable performances I've ever seen. Ditto his performance in MCML which was just stunning. His Jack Celliers, wow, and the rest of the cast is just as good. Ladyhawke, what's not to like? The whole cast, the script, the filming, and yes, even the much maligned soundtrack, I like it all. Cat People, yes, 1982, but not so much for Kinski really. She's not bad but it's the stunning visuals, the score, and most of all McDowell's performance that keep me coming back to this one. It's way underrated that film and while I am also fond of the Lewton classic, I like this version better. Frank Langella, as Dracula, in his prime when he was a number of lbs thinner, a lot younger and still sexy as HECK. Enough said, though I am also very fond of his Zorro come to think of it. It was a total retread that film, but I really liked his Don Diego...
Hate the SW prequels but will watch the originals forever, particularly ROTJ. Ditto most of the Trek films with the old cast though there are certain ones I like more than others like II. Harry Potter, the Wizard of Oz, to be watched once a year, at least. Oh and of course LOTR movies and Jackson's Kong. Indy, all of them, movies, TV series, can't get enough of Indy. All the Omen (original) and Exorcist movies except Exorcist II which totally sucks. Anything major monster, Hammer films, but not so much the less well known stuff. Vincent Price's Poe Corman films. Universal Monsters, the originals, Nosferatu, silents with Lon Chaney, and probably a hundred other probably semi-obscure films that I just cannot think of right now.
I am a total film geek....
