Katia is a bit of a wild card this far out, but her spin up to a Cat 3 so quickly is not a good sign. And she could go almost anywhere from where she'll be on Saturday. FL and GA might want to make sure those electric truck come home from the northeast in time.

There are some areas nearby that will be without power for weeks and also some communities are still cut off. The large ski resorts of Killington and Stratton and the towns nearby are only accessible by air. There are a lot of summer vacationers there stranded. I work for a food company and our trucks deliver to most of the affected areas. The trip from Syracuse to Albany with a set of doubles, they have to drive south to Binghampton on I 81 and then back up I 88 to Schenectady but product is getting delivered. Lake George is mostly shut down and without power or running water. Rt 9 downtown was washed out. The last thing the NE needs is more rain.

The Thruway reopened today, but if your drivers were using 5 or 20 then they are still out of luck.

Gotta wonder why these guys just didn't go get a couple of boats.

Sure, these vehicles have snorkels and are supposed to be amphibious, but they were never designed to be driven for more than a few yards with the water above the hood, much less up to the roof. THey are not freakin' submarines! Frankly they were lucky they didn't hit the bridge abutments since there was no way the drivers could see.

The New Jersey National Guard is not taking disciplinary action against the five soldiers who drove into floodwaters in Manville Sunday morning and narrowly escaped drowning, authorities said today.

A task force commander spoke with the two drivers, and there is a "formal inquiry" into the incident, but that is routine procedure for all events that are considered vehicle accidents, said Chief Warrant Officer Patrick Daugherty, a spokesman for the New Jersey National Guard.

The incident was seen on a YouTube video that went viral after the storm.

"Based off the facts of the inquiring officer, if disciplinary action is necessary, they will take whatever appropriate actions are necessary," he said.

Daugherty said the soldiers did not know the depth of the floodwaters. They were dispatched from the Morristown Armory and to Netcong to aid local law enforcement when they received another mission and were diverted to Manville.

The soldiers attempted to ford the newly formed river at the intersection of South Main Street and Kennedy Boulevard, but as they did the engines and electricity of their two vehicles stopped functioning, Daugherty said.

"At the time they entered the water, they believed they were fine until everything turned off. At that time they panicked a little bit," he said.

Seven people were inside the two Light Medium Tactical Vehicles, which are capable of driving through 46 inches of water, Daugherty said.

Manville firefighters rescued the group, which included five National Guard soldiers, a Manville police officer and Star-Ledger photographer Tony Kurdzuk, after the nearly submerged vehicles broke down.

"The chain of command is taking the incident seriously," Daugherty said. "They know the soldiers went in with the best intentions. They were perhaps a bit too confident."

The five soldiers are no longer assisting with storm-related aid, but that is not a disciplinary measure resulting from Sunday's incident, Daugherty said. The New Jersey National Guard scaled back its active duty force from 2,000 to about 730 soldiers since the hurricane hit, he said.

The disabled vehicles were retrieved Tuesday morning and taken away on a flat-bed truck. Manville police declined to comment on the incident.

At the very least these guardsmen should have committed only one of the trucks until they determined the route was passable. And that one should have backed off once the water started coming in the windows. As it is there is probably extensive and expensive damage to the engines. Even diesels don't like ingesting water into the cylinders.

By the way, the Light Medium Tactical Vehicles (LMTVs) are the the replacement for the old "Deuce and a Half" (2.5 ton truck).

Mike

p.s. I'd like to see the photo from when the water was up to the top of the canopy... LOL

Thankfully, things are getting back to normal, although slowly. Lake George plans to be opened up for the weekend, although damage is evident everywhere. Our Vermont neighbors aren't doing as well and the High Peaks area of the Adirondacks was hard hit. All High Peaks hiking trails have been shut down as there have been numerous slides. Lake Placid was cut off from the east and Rt. 73 is still shut down. You can now get there from Rte. 3 and 86 from Keesville. Power is back on almost everywhere except for a few backroads.
