Bringing vegemite outside of Australian borders should be considered an act of terrorism. That stuff is vile beyond words.

That stuff is so bad that my mom used it as a punishment when I was a kid. Even the threat of it was enough. It really is one of the most vile things on the planet.

Then again, you are not an Aussie. To many an Aussie, Vegemite on toast for breakfast is a must. Love it!!

Jolepp : You can try it, but I must agree with kanafein, to many non Aussies it is the next thing to poison.

For those of us who have not been exposed to this stuff, can you describe it in non-obscene terms? Thanks!

Delicious Australian spread, made from used brewer's yeast. Non-Australians tend to give descriptions of it similar to 'tastes like a mixture of salt and battery acid'. This is because they are wimps, and need to drink more beer, eat more pies, and of course, eat more Vegemite.
Yum....

It's delicious.

But its major use is a smear across the forehead to scare off the Drop Bears (a kind of carnivorous koala which naive tourists often fall prey to). Handing it out on aeroplanes as they are about to land in Australia would be a very good idea.

Have you ever had a really nasty (outdoor) trash bin that you haven't cleaned in ages. It's got a nasty stink to it whenever you open it? Imagine smearing the dank dark slime at the bottom of that bin on your bread and you might be close to understanding vegemite. The smell is very similar giving it's from yeast spores from the air run amok.

Indeed, it's amazing what we like from what we grow up with.
Vegemite's good, and my kids like it too. My wife doesn't, but they don't have Vegemite where she comes from.
Good for ol' uncle Kev - if the US can export a team of Maccas to go and set up camp for their troops abroad (ie. McDonalds for all you folk who call it Mickie D's) then Mr Rudd should be allowed to cart some Vegemite with him on the plane.

Here's a good example of what we can do with Vegemite (other than enjoy it on toast):

Its made from fermented yeast extract. Looks and spreads like axle grease. I would its describe taste as having a transition of 2 or 3 flavours. Starts off sweet, then goes bitter then leaves this wacky after taste that you usually experience when eating pure chocolate, vintage/sharp cheese or the bean stuff you get on Mexican food.

If you've never tried it before, I would recommend this serving suggestion:
-Fresh sandwich, heavily buttered with slim spread of vegemite.
-Add some sliced tomato and shreaded cheese.
-Pepper
-Probably for the best if you got a strong drink on hand too just in case XD

Vegemite is awesome. It's a shame no one but us seem to really appreciate just how good it is , I find it's equally delicious on toast, cheese and biscuits or just as it is!

The trick with vegemite is to have it on toast (or biscuits) with butter and to spead it thinly! I agree that spead thickly it would taste like poison!
