9 policies Conservatives were for before they were against them

9 Policies Conservatives Were For Long Before They Were Against Them | News & Politics | AlterNet

1. The Health-Care Mandate - Bob Dole must have been a flaming Librul.
2. Cap and Trade - Acid rain and climate change are myths.
3. Small Business Tax Credits - If Obama is for it it must be Librul.
4. Infrastructure Bank - Ditto
5. Supplier-Side Cuts to Medicare - Pay no attention to that budget we voted for in 2011.
6. Financial Disclosure Laws - Until Citizens United, thanks Roberts court.
7. Encouraging Low-income Home Ownership - A mortgage is just another form of rent.
8. The Fairness Doctrine - That was before they had their own "news" network.
9. Judicial Restraint - It's only "legislating from the bench" if they don't like it.

Boriscleto, right on!

I seem to recall that Richard Nixon, that flaming liberal, advocated for universal health care AND some sort of guaranteed annual income!

Certainly judicial restraint is desireable, except for the Supremes in 2000.

All too often politicians rely on Joseph Goebbels' dictum of The Big Lie. If it is said often enough and loudly enough anything will come to be accepted as true. Case in point, Rush Limbaugh.

And Teddy Kennedy regretted blocking it for the rest of his life.

So he was against it before he was for it? Read: against it when it was a Republican's proposal.
Wait, never mind. Democrats never do that sort of thing.

The difference is.
He admitted his regret.
Never heard that from a teabagger.

The old guard republicans were just people with different ideas, not necessarily bad. The new guard is freaking insane. I wouldn't have had too much beef with Eisenhower.

Teabaggery is entertaining, until it hurts.

and you can add these all under Nixon...

10. National Environmental Policy Act of 1969
11. Created the EPA in 1970
12. Clean Air Act Extension of 1970
13. Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972
14. Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974
15. Endangered Species Act of 1973

Not a chance in hell anyone in the Republican party now, Teabagger or not, would support these last 6.

He used the 1906 Antiquities Act that the Republicans are now against even though it was Republican Teddy Roosevelt who pushed for it's passage.

Next time Obama mentions he went to church the Republicans and John will be demanding making them illegal. The best way to increase taxes to the rich is for the Democrats to propose decreasing them once again (did not the tax decrease extension get called a tax increase?) If I was an American conservative I would be embarrassed by the GOP as it is today.

WELL SAID !
The difference that I see is that in times in the not so far past, the
elected members of the House and Senate were legislators for the
most part.
They would fight tooth and nail for some legislation of great importance
to them but would compromise on other legislation. They for the most
part had the ultimate goal of what was good for the country. Not that
it was all altruistic. They wanted their pork barrel perks and wanted to push
their party's general philosophy. BUT, for the most part, they did not want to
destroy the other party and oppose everything the other party proposed
just to stop the "enemy". They saw the opposition as that - opposition
and a party with different ideas not "the enemy".
Quite often after a long session a mixed group would put aside their
differences and go out to dinner or for a drink together as colleagues.

And yeah, yeah, I am aware of McCarthy and also of the Dixiecrats, and
others - I said "for the most part".

My two cents about this is that the end of actual compromise between the parties ended with the creation of CNN and the 24/7 news cycle and the creation of the blogosphere no longer can politicians create the back room deals like the could in times past. The result is that both parties are now entrenched and unwilling to compromise because the will be crucified by the blogosphere within minutes of a vote if it's seen as a non-party approved vote. As for those in the republican party that are still "rockerfeller republicans" our mistake is that we let the Christian coalition take a leading part in the party back in the 80's and we can't get rid of the bastards.

Information yearns to be free. You can blame the internet too, if you want.
That ain't it.
It's just not that simple.
Information is the job of the press.
I would rather have it than not.
Look towards who is funding what among the many lobbies and front groups and the kinds of legislation they are purchasing.
Pull back the curtain, Dorothy and you will find the wizards.
Ted Turner is hardly a socialist.
Find another curtain.

A lot of us are embarrassed, but I'm afraid not enough.
