Certainly judicial restraint is desireable, except for the Supremes in 2000.

All too often politicians rely on Joseph Goebbels' dictum of The Big Lie. If it is said often enough and loudly enough anything will come to be accepted as true. Case in point, Rush Limbaugh.

Next time Obama mentions he went to church the Republicans and John will be demanding making them illegal. The best way to increase taxes to the rich is for the Democrats to propose decreasing them once again (did not the tax decrease extension get called a tax increase?) If I was an American conservative I would be embarrassed by the GOP as it is today.

The difference that I see is that in times in the not so far past, the
elected members of the House and Senate were legislators for the
most part.
They would fight tooth and nail for some legislation of great importance
to them but would compromise on other legislation. They for the most
part had the ultimate goal of what was good for the country. Not that
it was all altruistic. They wanted their pork barrel perks and wanted to push
their party's general philosophy. BUT, for the most part, they did not want to
destroy the other party and oppose everything the other party proposed
just to stop the "enemy". They saw the opposition as that - opposition
and a party with different ideas not "the enemy".
Quite often after a long session a mixed group would put aside their
differences and go out to dinner or for a drink together as colleagues.

And yeah, yeah, I am aware of McCarthy and also of the Dixiecrats, and
others - I said "for the most part".

My two cents about this is that the end of actual compromise between the parties ended with the creation of CNN and the 24/7 news cycle and the creation of the blogosphere no longer can politicians create the back room deals like the could in times past. The result is that both parties are now entrenched and unwilling to compromise because the will be crucified by the blogosphere within minutes of a vote if it's seen as a non-party approved vote. As for those in the republican party that are still "rockerfeller republicans" our mistake is that we let the Christian coalition take a leading part in the party back in the 80's and we can't get rid of the bastards.

A lot of us are embarrassed, but I'm afraid not enough.
