West of Dallas/Ft Worth $2.87 yesterday...a couple of locals got in a small price war...very unusual, don't see that much nowadays. The cheapest I ever bought it was in a price war at 15.9 cents a gallon.....I had a 55 Chevy and it was eight years old at the time....used more oil than gas!

It is clear that oil as we know it is limited in its availability.
Over the last decade or so, people have been trying to predict the moment that the world oil production will not be able to keep up with the (growing) world oil demand.
This moment is call the "peak oil" moment.

You can find many web sites on this topic.
It is generally assumed that as the peak oil scenario develops that the oil prices will sky rocket.
Now, when will this happen? If we are to believe the peak oil publisists: SOON!

Here is a picture from the Peak oil wiki:

From heatingoil.com, http://www.heatingoil.com/blog/dept-of-energy-acknowledges-possibility-of-pe...fter-2011406/:

The general agreement is that a peak oil scenario will happen, the disagreement is when.
Some say 2015, some say 2030, etc.
I think it is wise to prepare ourselves and our children for such an event.

Bert

17 miles to work. No train. Bus ride 2+ hours. Los Angeles and environs realistically measures about 250 square miles. Try walking that :-)

A gallon of gas? We use litres of petrol.
We used to have a car that ran on gas, CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), it was soooo cheap to run.
Petrol here is now about $2.10 a litre.

It took a nose dive this weekend down to 3.13 at Sam's Club and about 3 cents more at discount stations.

~$AUD5.74 a US gallon (~$1.50/litre)

(Resisting all temptations to state 'A US gallon is about 3.78 Litres where I come from....' )

4.546l = 1 gallon = 1.201US gallon
so we pay $9.55 a gallon or $7.95 a US gallon.
or US$7.27 a gallon or US$6.05 a US gallon. So about double US prices.

This is for 91 octane. 95 is dearer.

Hrm, actually, standard here is 87, except for a few cars made or tuned to run on it, there's generally no point to more: 93's about as high as they even sell, and that costs quite a bit more. It's mostly a waste with the cars here.

And, yeah, a liter is slightly more than a quart, and there's four quarts to a gallon, so Adrian's right.

Here in Lithuania paid 1,77$/L today, that would be 6,4$/us gallon.
And average sallary is ~633$ after taxes, so average person can buy 100 gallons of petrol

In Oil rich Alberta still way too much as we export most of it , today we feel less raped as it is about $1.03/Litre. It has been as high as about $1.35 - not sure it's been mentioned as I have not read the entire thread but the game here is usually start at let's say $0.95 - raise it $1.05 - hear the cries of the people , lower it down to $0.98 everyone is happy (then you thibk hey wait a minute .....it started at $0.95 !!!) Loop.

Most fortunate I live 14 steps (yes that's right walking steps) from the office so the last several years I don't need to daily comute at least. At some point though for long trips you have to look at flying and a car rental as a cheaper alternative ....

Two local stations here in NJ have reg unl for $2.99 gal. BTW the lowest price I ever seen was 17 cents for reg gas in May 1968 in Kansas while driving from Alaska to Ft Campbell Ky.

That depends on where in the US one lives in. Here in rural AK I am currently paying a fixed price of $7.01 a gallon, down .28 cents from last year. This is the first time the price of gas being lower than the previous year in a long, long time.
