Shortwave, eh? Don't be without the classic
Sony ICF-2010 portable commo receiver/scanner -- AM/shortwave wide/narrow SSB/DSB from 100Khz-30Mhz, FM from 50-110Mhz, Aircraft around 140-160MHz IIRC. It's a doozy. I have two -- bought one, then inherited one. It's from a time before Sony went to hell. Just superb, and it won't burn down the house. Unless you have a propane leak maybe.
Once back in the early Yeltsin era, I was scanning around 5400Khz on my ICF-2010, and I picked up a station that WRTH said was from a Siberian mining town. Research revealed the presence of prison camps, probably leftover Gulag salt mines. And what is this station playing on an East Siberian evening? Music. American roots music. Certain songs: (That's the sound of the men) Working On The Chain Gang; The Work Song (Been workin' down on the chain gang); Folsom Prison Blues; Midnight Special; etc. Oh, those funny Russians...
