US Army 1975-1981. Never forget, never regret (even though it sucked). We volunteer for various specific reasons, but it boils down to this: There's a community with needs beyond our personal concerns, and that greater community is worth defending with our lives. And we need to ensure that it remains worth defending.

While we celebrate this as Veteran's Day in the U.S., thank you to all the veterans of all countries who took the torch and held it high.

And this for those who cannot be here.

In Flanders Fields by John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

*salutes* But don't look at me, they weren't letting gals fly, then, and before 'Don't ask Don't Tell,' it was 'We do assume, and prosecute."

(Sorry, Uncle Sam, not this lifetime. Woulda been cool, though.)

I wish I could thank my Dad for siccing the Navy recruiter on me all those years ago as I was adrift without a rudder or destination. I found something I really enjoyed. That is not saying that it did not have some bumps along the way and it was over way too soon. To all who have offered thanks today, Thank you for caring enough to say Thank You to those of us that have served and are presently serving . USN 62-88 Cliff

Seconded... Tolerance and acceptance of being different is better now than it was, and things will hopefully keep improving.

Watching Captain America right now, actually, pity they never did find a way to either give me a plane or a perm, but it's kinda fitting. (Always did look good in an Eisenhower jacket, anyway.

I was working on a deeper connection there, but eh.

Tribute-like ish.

You are absolutely correct. I "volunteered" after I got my draft notice (1964). Back then, once you received your draft notification, you had 10 days to get on active duty with another branch. Otherwise, you were in the Arny. I proudly served the USN 1964-1968.
