do you have a source that proves he thinks that? if so, then yes he would be technically wrong, as Hawaii is a part of Oceania, specifically the subregion of Polynesia. however, it should be noted that there are overlaps in the definition distinctions between the southeast asian region and Oceania (because Oceania is an ecozone not a continent), for which Hawaii falls under. this includes nations that are considered a part of southeast asia but they are not included geopolitically. suffice to say that it could be easily mistaken that Hawaii is a part of the easternmost reaches of Asia in terms of geographical area and cultural identity.

what is it that you are actually trying to prove with your statement? that Hawaii is 'american' (in case you didn't know, Hawaii's flag still includes the Union Jack of the United Kingdom, and is the only state in the union to do so) or that it is a part of the americas because it is a state in our union? or that you think obama is ignorant? because all three would be wrong.

Obama Mistakenly Refers to Hawaii as 'Asia' During Summit

Published November 15, 2011

AP

Nov. 13, 2011: President Obama speaks during his closing press conference at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit near Honolulu, Hawaii.

It's hard to mistake that Hawaiian scenery.

But President Obama apparently forgot where he was during his press conference Sunday on the outskirts of Honolulu -- despite being born there.

The president mistakenly described his location as "Asia" while answering a question about budget cuts.

"When I meet with world leaders, what's striking -- whether it's in Europe or here in Asia -- the kinds of fundamental reforms and changes, both on the revenue side and the public pension side, that other countries are having to make are so much more significant than what we need to do in order to get our books in order," Obama said.

Obama understandably had Asia on the mind, as his press conference came in the middle of the U.S. hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, where representatives from many Asian countries were in attendance.

And, hey, Hawaii is a latecomer, having only been a state since 1959.

Technically, Hawaii isn't in Asia, but neither is it geographically fixed to North America. Because it's a chain of islands, belonging to Polynesia, it is not part of any continent. Politically, however, Congress made sure the 50th state had its own star on the blue field of the U.S. flag representing the Union.

Hawaii is also Obama's birthplace, a fact the president has hammered since the campaign in the face of debunked claims that he wasn't actually born on U.S. soil. The president even referenced Hawaii as his birthplace the day before, reportedly making a crack about those conspiracy theories.

Obama set out Tuesday from Hawaii to Australia. After that, he'll land in Indonesia, which unlike Hawaii is part of Asia proper.

But Obama said Monday he'll try to return to Asia -- er, Hawaii -- for his Christmas and New Year's holiday, according to the Hawaii Reporter.

hah that article had fox news' signature all over it. anyway, what point are you trying to prove here jack? your linked article only answered my first question on providing proof he made the mistake. (hanks for providing that by the way) but you still haven't said what you are getting at. ok, he made a mistake. it happens, even when you are in the land of your birth. whats the big deal? so ill ask again, whats your point? clearly you have one, and its clearly aimed at cutting up the president, but I can't figure out what you are getting at because I know full well, based on the tone of that linked fox news article that you see things with the same spin they put on it.

Well, Obama sure is dumb.

Everyone (now) knows Hawaii is a part of no continent, geographically speaking.

Geopolitically - and commercially - there is a concept of ASPAC - Asia Pacific - which often is colloquially shortened to "asia" - based on context of course. Since Obama's context is geopolitical and commercial, to be persnickety about it, he ought to have said "Asia Pacific", though in context any reasonable person would understand that this is what "Asia" meant.

So who's dumb?

Yes, shame on him for shortening the name of "Asia Pacific" at the Asia Pacific conference. And kudos to Fox News for being the only media outlet with the courage to call him on his shamelessness.

Jack, yes, Obama is a geographical bone head. In his defence, if you look closely at his eyes, they aren't on the teleprompter but rather on a bottle of Heinz ketchup
