Hi Tim,

Sorry to hear about the trouble with your ebay buy! That sucks about the non delivery. At least you still have a chance to recoup through your cc. I didn't know they did that!

What kind of 300mm was it? I have a Tammy 300mm f5.6 and I find I struggle in low light to get good pictures. Makes me wish for something slightly faster. I've used it a few times on the trip (we drove to Adelaide) in the car, and the pictures came out not as nice as I'd have liked. Course it could well be user error. The hood that came with mine may as well not be. I think I might have to duck tape it onto the lens. Otherwise it just slides off.

Adelaide is good - I arrived this evening and just had the YUMMIEST greek dinner in town - The Greek on Halifax. We stumbled out of there without even getting to dessert. It was THAT good and THAT filling. Just looking at the dessert menu was enough to get the tummy in uproar.

Have to go and check out the camera store tomorrow, and then figure out what to do for the day before heading down to the foo fighters in the evening.

It was a Takumar 300/6.3 preset, 1962-1971, 729g. That length, speed and mass make it like a Tamron 28-300 at 300 that I was given, but I have come to quite like the aesthetic of the takumars, and the discipline of prime lenses.

Oh, a Takumar 300mm. I must've missed that bit. Coooool. I didn't know they'd made a 300mm! Ok, I'm heading out to check the camera store. *squee*

The Takumar 300mm models were:
Takumar 300mm f/4-32 (M) 3-3 7m min focus 1,360g 82mm filter 1958-1965 #729
Takumar 300mm f/4-32 (M) 4-4 5.5m 1,575g 82mm c1966-c1966 #346 #729
Super-Takumar 300mm f/4-22 (A) 5-5 5.5m 946g 77mm 1969-1972 #43891 #7083
S-M-C Takumar 300mm f/4-22 (A) 5-5 5.5m 946g 77mm 1972-1976 #43892 #7271
Tele-Takumar 300mm f/6.3-22 (P) 5-5 5.5m 729g 58mm 1962-1971 #363 #824

The Tele-Tak model seemed like a good choice when it was availabel much cheaper thant he typical price of the others, and although slower was much lighter and smaller than the others. The near focus point of them all is a significant compromise, but there are plenty of other lenses for close work. Also, I have never used a preset, and it seems others talk very nicely about them, and the bokeh they produce. (The eBay vendor had 100% rating prior and a large number of transactions. Seemed to be an antique dealer, not a camera shop.)
