Thanks all. It does feel a bit strange to be starting a new job a week short of age 67.
Congrats, Ed! Does that mean we will have less glamour portraits but more lens porn from you? :P

Congrats on the new job Ed. Longest stint I've gone is 6 months and that was tough. a year and a half would be very hard.
Mind you the way my investments have gone lately i'm now on the freedom 75 plan rather than the freedom 55 one

Congratulations on returning to work! I've got you beat by a year (I was 68 in May), but you've got me by a week in starting to work -- I start on 12 Dec. However, I was actually retired, and was offered a position that I simply couldn't turn down.

Good luck with your new job. Hope you make a zillion $$$.

Wow. I recently visited the US for the first time and was surprised to see so many elderly (no offence!) people working. Here in Northern Europe it seems almost nobody above 60 is working. Then again, my generation (I'm in my mid 40s now) probably has to keep on working until we drop.

Eh, I'm in my Fourties and still trying to get *started* by those standards. It does just keep getting shoved back, some of these schemes about 'retiring' or even working in the first place. They treat employees like 'liabilities' these days, and 'jobs' like commodities. Everyone's still playing catch-up. It's even worse for people a bit younger than I.

Congratulations!

I've occasionally had a dry spell of a few months, never the time you've endured. The relief at being once more gainfully employed after the grinding existential uncertainy can't be really be understood by those who've never experienced it.

I read somewhere lately that 25% of the US employees plans on working untill they are 80, to be able to afford it. Thats 2 years longer than there average median life lenght

Yes!

however, probably not quite as frequently.
My first four days on the job have been very physically demanding. It feels good to be tired from doing a good days work.

I know that feeling, Ed - enjoy it while it lasts! I'm not that far behind you and I went back to full-time employment a little while ago, after a long period of being self-employed.

Some people here think we of the "selfish" Baby-Boom generation (I know you're on the edge of it) are all putting our feet up early and bludging off the "hard-working" Generation-Xers. Not so, in many cases that I know (of either generational charicature, come to think of it). Still, worthwhile work brings dignity to those who labour (which is uncomfortably close to "Arbeit macht frei", I know, but the sentiment is true, in my experience).

A lot of people are clearly hoping you haven't hung up your Glamour Photo hat.
