Yeah, we've chewed-over this a bit in the last couple months. Some think the technology could evolve into something useful; right now it seems meant for Facebook pix and may be targeted to fone.cam applications. It seems to need a 20pmx sensor to produce a 2mpx image. Yow.

There are alternatives. Samsung patented a two-lens two-sensor system, one taking an infinite-DOF shot, the other a blurry shot, with software blending them for the desired focus. IMHO this could be done with just one lens+sensor: shoot sharp, make a blurred copy, blend as desired.

I apply the same test to the Lytro as I do to claims of paranormal goodies like water-witching and zero-point energy: if they worked as claimed, greedy capitalists would exploit them massively. If the Lytro concept really worked, some megacorp would have gobbled it up. Oh well...

I'd like to see more specs besides f2 8x zoom, though that is a good start :-)
