YMMV. Why didn't the pawner have the trunk? All sorts of possible explanations, many of them contra-indicative of a lens being treated with reasonable care.
Well, that's the risk of buying something from a pawn shop

You're right that there's no way to know how the lens was treated in the past, and without any warranty, one should bid accordingly.

I'm looking down the list of 10+ years of neutral/negative feedback as presented by toolhaus.org. I agree that 3 out of 250 is not a bad rate, and no question there is a lot of bogus negative feedback on eBay. Again, YMMV. I might take a chance with a low-cost item from a seller I don't fully trust, but for an item of this class I will be more selective. More power to the winning bidder if it turns out to be a bargain. I will be curious as to what the lens goes for, but I will not be bidding.
Actually, it was 1 in 250, not 3 in 250 (99.6% feedback score).

But again, I agree with you in general that as the price of an item goes up, so should a buyer's comfort level with the person he's buying it from. However, I still feel that the overall risk of buying something on eBay in particular is pretty low as buyers are afforded a very high level of protection against receiving goods that are no as described.

Most sellers that are not lens or photo specialists have no idea how to present and/or inspect lenses. (My favorite listings are along the lines "Tiffen 49mm lens! Looks great!"). Just make sure you can return it and be thankful their carelessness will help keep the price down.
Agreed, it reads like they are describing it as best they can...but they are not a photographer - I doubt they've done a thorough internal inspection or shone a light inside the lens to reveal fungus or other imperfections. With a 7 day return policy I don't see a problem with it.

And also, NR means no reserve not no return.

I stand corrected on the NR issue. And, I will stop using it to mean No Return in my listings

So, anyone here the winning bidder on this one? If the lens is in even marginally reasonable condition, looks like a great price, even including some extra for a CLA and a new case.

I see nothing wrong with a seller with 5000+ sales and a 99.6% positive rate. Not showing the glass is also par for the course with pawn shops. Having said that, I wouldn't spend that kind of money without seeing the item in person unless it was brand new.

The seller is also kind of a jerk. Arguing with buyers over $8 items on eBay is not smart business.

given eBay and paypal policy arguing with buyers is ridiculous in any case, just offer a refund when it's returned. your return policy means nothing to eBay and paypal
Hell if you sell anywhere Arguing with customers is dumb

+1.

If you sell on eBay and the buyer wants to return the item, your "return policy" is effectively meaningless. And, as you said, arguing with customers is just bad business

Well, he is only "arguing" after the fact of someone leaving him negative feedback he can't get rid of, so he can either leave a comment or not. Sell enough stuff on ebay and you will get undeserved negative comments sometimes for no reason. You can usually tell if the seller is actual trouble or just doesn't "get" ebay (or just had some a-hole buyers) by the complaints and their responses. With this particular seller, I see no jeopardy. You might be out a shipping charge (and have the main cost tied up for a while if it didn't work out) but on a lens like this it could be worth the gamble. These are actually the kind of situations I look for in order to find deals -- there is uncertainty which keeps some bidders away but in the end no real risk.

The trick on an auction like this one is if you see the listing with at least two days befor the end of the sale, email and ask the lister if they can either send you or post pictures of what you would like to see.

The seller should be able to get pictures posted or sent within a day before the end of the auction.

I totally agree with you in regards to this seller. As I said in my earlier posts, I see no red flags with this listing nor with the seller. If I were looking for a bargain on an A*300/2.8, I would not have hesitated to bid on this one.

Final price was $1136. Is that a bargain for this lens?

Assuming the optics and mechanics of the lens are in good shape, then $1136 is certainly a good price.
