Mysterious abbreviations.

Hi all.

I know that this question pop up ones in a while, it must be tedious for the senior members (The Elders) to answer these questions again and again.

I bought a K5 and joined this forum three months ago. I have come across some abbreviations that are unknown to me. Some of them refer to photography and some do not.

Can you help me out, it can sometimes be difficult to understand the whole meaning of a text.

Here are some examples, taken from the forum, please feel free to add to the list.

IMO, This one appears frequently.
UWA
FOV, Field Of View?
LBA, economics.
AFAIAC
PPG
OOF something of field?
IQ, quality?
OCD

These I do know: DOF, AF/MF, FF/HF, OJ, ASAP, LOL.

Perhaps some a made up by people, but the technical abbreviations interest me.

Thank you.

You'll notice that some of the more common ones are underlined and when you over over them, you get the full text, but most of those you already know!

There are new ones popping up all the time as people make them up.

These abbreviations are a total nightmare if you don't know their meanings.

I was taught that the proper way to use them is to write the full text the first time it is used, Capitalizing Each Word, then using the abbreviation after that is acceptable.

The Full Text should always be used if the hover feature isn't available.

It's a right pain in the butt if you can't understand someone's shortened sentences.

Once again, if the hover feature isn't available, please use TFT.

Quick distinctions.

BRB, FBI, CIA: Abbreviations. These do not make a new word with each letter.
NASA, GEX, MADD: Acronyms. These make up a new word with each letter.

Isn't BRB a TLA for Be Right Back?

If NASA is an acronym, then FBI and CIA are as well.

An abbreviation (from Latin brevis, meaning short) is a shortened form of a word or phrase. Usually, but not always, it consists of a letter or group of letters taken from the word or phrase. For example, the word abbreviation can itself be represented by the abbreviation abbr., abbrv. or abbrev.
CentCom = abbreviation for Central Command, etc.
