To put the drift of the article succinctly:

The death of "God"=The death of "America"
or, if you are on the Right,
The death of "America"=The death of "God"

being as Americans hold that God and America are Consubstantial.

I don't need to be a global citizen
'Cause I'm blessed by nationality
I'm a member of a growing populace
We enforce our popularity

There are things that seem to pull us under and
There are things that drag us down
But there's a power and a vital presence
It's lurking all around

We've got the American Jesus
See him on the interstate
We've got the American Jesus
He helped build the president's estate

Sorely needed. What a terrible writer. I read on and on hoping to find the point. I never did figure out what he wanted to say and I wasn't about to wade through that obtuse meandering blather again.

BOB DYLAN LYRICS

"With God On Our Side"

Oh my name it is nothin'
My age it means less
The country I come from
Is called the Midwest
I was taught and brought up there
The laws to abide
And the land that I live in
Has God on its side.

Oh the history books tell it
They tell it so well
The cavalries charged
The Indians fell
The cavalries charged
The Indians died
Oh the country was young
With God on its side.

The Spanish-American
War had its day
And the Civil War too
Was soon laid away
And the names of the heroes
I was made to memorize
With guns on their hands
And God on their side.

The First World War, boys
It came and it went
The reason for fighting
I never did get
But I learned to accept it
Accept it with pride
For you don't count the dead
When God's on your side.

When the Second World War
Came to an end
We forgave the Germans
And then we were friends
Though they murdered six million
In the ovens they fried
The Germans now too
Have God on their side.

I've learned to hate Russians
All through my whole life
If another war comes
It's them we must fight
To hate them and fear them
To run and to hide
And accept it all bravely
With God on my side.

But now we got weapons
Of the chemical dust
If fire them we're forced to
Then fire them we must
One push of the button
And a shot the world wide
And you never ask questions
When God's on your side.

In a many dark hour
I've been thinkin' about this
That Jesus Christ
Was betrayed by a kiss
But I can't think for you
You'll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot
Had God on his side.

So now as I'm leavin'
I'm weary as Hell
The confusion I'm feelin'
Ain't no tongue can tell
The words fill my head
And fall to the floor
If God's on our side
He'll stop the next war.

I don't think that's what the author was getting at, but I agree that he was not very clear at all.

It can perhaps be summed up with this excerpt from the article:

"...The great irony is that the almost pathological fervency with which the religious right in America tries to sustain faith as a necessary condition for democracy is the surest formula for insuring that the faith that is sustained is not the Christian faith."

Or, if I'm allowed to summarize with my own paraphrase of that point: America's Christian God is being changed into something non-Christian - a death, in other words, on the pikes of his unknowing soldiers.

This seemed offer an explanation as to how a nation can have both "the separation of church and state" and an official motto "In God We Trust" (printed/embossed on the currency).

LOL! That makes as much sense as the article.

You nailed it Jay.

The Funddamentalist Right stance on Health Care (screw you, I've got mine) and the clamoring for war with Iran seem to be egregious examples. I don't believe Jesus would agree with either.

Well, yes: it would seem that the explanation cannot be strictly logical. I think I understand the issue better having read that though .
