Not an Authorized Dealer for ANYTHING they sell. See their Warranty page (which is buried about 4 layers deep in their site):

I can't say whether DWI are good or bad to deal with, but with their very proscriptive warranty terms, they COULD refuse warranty service on the basis of upgrading the firmware yourself, or connecting your camera to a PC. On the other hand, neither of these issues affect a lens!
It is nice to buy through an authorised agent for piece of mind, which includes a measure of confidence because the manufacturer has shown confidence in distributing through the agent.

thanks guy for the prompt replies.
it's definitely a catch 22.

i've looked at the warranty page earlier prior to post. it's a grey import. ( as good as it gets, with a bit of russian roulette!) hence i'm only looking at lens with no motor drive whatsoever.
then again, it's no difference from buying it on ebay.

would be nice to get it locally with local warranty ( 6 yr tamron warranty) but for the price they want ie. >40% markup. i think this is ridiculous, considering the dollar value's now on par with us dollars.
i think i will write to tamron australia to voice my resentment. somehow, australians always suffer when it comes to pricing.

i will post update once i get update/ reply from tamron australia

DWI seem fine; similar to other grey importers (eg T-Dimension); plenty of feedback available on Whirlpool - http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1769281&p=30

i've wrote to tamron but not holding my breath for a response.

caught up with another friend, confirmed he bought a k5 from them last year ( even bigger risk but all seem ok)

anyway, i've just put an order with dwi.
total cost $393 ( incl shipping + marumi 67mm super dhg uv filter + 2% paypal fees)

Aust local pricing $ AU 539 - $699 ( lens only)

DWI are way better than store full of Canikon sellers.

I bought my camera through DWI, they were recommended to me by a friend . They are very thorough and provide various levels of purchase confirmation and for an extra $10 for priority courier, I got unbelievable tracking information and service. 3days from purchase.

I bought a Pentax K5 and 18-50 Lens for $1049, which is about $400 cheaper than DCW in Melbourne. I was originally going to buy from DCW and went in once to check out the camera, on the second occasion I went to buy it but ‘ended up’ getting directed to (it’s easy to do) a 7D and L series lens instead, I found myself being scaled up by about $1500+ and the obligatory, “So are you taking it now?”.

It was way out of my budget, so they suggested Flexirent…If they had have listened to me when I first arrived they would have made a sale. I had the cash and preferred a store to Hong Kong online. As it was, no one in the store had ever even shot Pentax, so ending up in the Canikon section was inevitable. The only camera they would power up and fit with a lens was a Canon 5D ….up scaled again. I left the store a bit confused and in doubt.

With DWI I also got myself 3 years Intl cover to offset the warranty issue with imported camera’s. Camera is a working technical marvel I highly recommend these guys.

Hi

You could check, the Whirlpool Australia forums for more opinions. They have big threads going about heaps of online sellers including DWI.

THANKS GUYS,
appreciate all your comments & suggestions.
the saga is now closed.
DWI did promised to deliver but failed. guys got no stock on hand but advertised as usual. event after i queried them, the ad was still online. ( should have said no stock!) i waited, waited to almost 4 weeks. emails were responded saying no stock & happy to give me a refund. in the end, called it quits, they stood by their word & gave me refund in full. i give them credit on this.
i was upset because of 4 weeks of time wasting.
anyway, browse ebay, found dzone2 ( from HK) with stock. done a buy it now, about $20 more, 5 day later, it was at my doorstep, posted via dhl. ALL GOOD NOW. this is a super sharp lens by the way! sharp with kr, just need to check it with my k5.
lesson of the day: make you email/ chat with them before buying via online paypal.

Glad you posted back, seems they are inconsistent then, hate to think I was lucky as they were highly recommended. I blew more cash in one hit online than I ever imagined.
To make you wait 4 weeks is pretty poor form at least you got refund. I had my eye on that nice silver 77f1.8 they got...... caveat emptor. Like Bruce said, prob time to check out forum sponsors.

I'm actually going to get more stuff thru DWI, I'm actually pretty rapped with what I got, regardless of the possibiltity of delay or unavailability. You know what else?
That cheepy 18-55 F3.5 kit lens is great and the low light capabilities of K5 are astounding. Will keep the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 hsm in mind when returning to landscapes though, cheers.

i use my sigma mainly for rallysport/ dance events. with the k5, shooting with iso3200 still looks pretty good. this lens with the k5 is super fast on focus.
normally use my sigma 30 f1.4 or sigma 14 f2.8 for landscape but will try n use this one for landscape one day.

anyway going back to my post on th tammy17-50mm f2.8. TOTALLY SATISFIED!
