Friend wants to buy my images for his business, need advice

A friend of mine has a side business. He wants to buy images from my flickr gallery (Flickr: photoleet's Photostream). My questions are :

1. What is a fair price ?

2. What kind of tax reporting I need to do from the income ?

3. Do I need to setup a company or something to sell ?

4. What kind of rights do I have after I sell the image ?

5. Anything else that I may need to know about selling.

He is going to be using the images as backgrounds on the laptop he rents and monitors he sells.

A lot of the answers will depend on what the usage of the image will be. Is it a one off print to hang in his office? Or is it to go on a website with potentially 5,000,000+ hits per year, or perhaps in print for distribution to 5 ppl? Or in print for distribution to 5,000,000 ppl?

I would if I had a stable income. I'm a senior year student and basically taking the semester off to study full time, so I have no income this semester.

1. What is a fair price ?

$100-$200 unlimited use for 1 year/image or $10-$50/use/image

2. What kind of tax reporting I need to do from the income ?

You can claim it as PT income.

3. Do I need to setup a company or something to sell ?

No, you don't have to establish yourself as it's PT income.

4. What kind of rights do I have after I sell the image ?

You are only selling "The use of the image(s)" , you retain full rights and should have that in your sales contract.

5. Anything else that I may need to know about selling.

Here's a sample site, as you see my pricing is rather conservative seeing he's your friend.

Stock Photo Subscription vs. Single Image Purchasing | Stock Photo Guides - Buying, selling and using stock photography

Check the stock sites and read their contracts.

*note* You should also try joining some of these sites and let them sell your images for a cut...you're in school, you have access to 'free" actors for different situations..."porn" excluded If you start selling a lot then and only then you should consider it , "a business" and fill out the required paper work etc.

It's also good to have an "image bot" run monthly to see if anyone is using your images without consent, especially to generate revenue.

To put some perspective in this, look at this Ad calculator (it's not truly correct) http://photographersindex.com/stockprice.htm
