So sad. If someone holds you up with a weapon, just give them your camera, it's not worth your life. I hope they catch these animals, lock them up and throw away the key.

Buenos Aires is a big and tough city (beautiful though!!) and Argentina has seen some really tough times the last decade, unfortunately frustration and poverty makes people sometimes do things they never would've done else.

RIP Laurent.

Man, that's sad...I, myself, having grown up in a third world country (Philippines) have witnessed a lot of those dangers when you're out on the mean streets. Just gotta be really careful, know the area that you're in, stay as inconspicuous as you can, and heaven forbid if someone sticks you up for your gear, just consider it a write off. As expensive as photo gear gets, life itself is much too precious.

And no, I didn't even risk bringing my K-x the last time I went back home. :|

That’s very sad. I was in Buenos Aires in 2010 and went to the same square he was attacked in, it’s in a tourist area so it’s not like he was in the wrong side of town.

The stabbing is also unusual as most crimes against tourists in B.A. are the petty pickpocket or the bag snatching kind. I had no issues during my stay and felt safe, though you do have to be aware of your surroundings at all times.

I did see a couple try to snatch a stewardess’s suitcase while she was waiting for a cab; the hotel doorman did catch the thief and got her bag back. She was out to lunch chatting with other flight crew and was oblivious to the whole thing. I was also walking one morning and a police officer pointed to my camera and indicated I should hide it as the area was not safe for that time of day.

Phil.
