Daytona 500 will boast a record purse of more than $19 million

QuoteQuote:
The Daytona 500 will boast a record purse of more than $19 million, and the winner of NASCAR's biggest race is guaranteed a minimum $1.4 million.

Daytona International Speedway also announced Wednesday a $200,000 bonus for the driver leading at the halfway point of the race.

The ''Daytona 500 Mid-Race Leader Award'' will not be automatically awarded if the race is under caution at lap 100. The bonus will then be rolled over and paid to the driver leading the race at the completion of the fifth consecutive green flag lap following the caution.

Daytona president Joie Chitwood believes the bonus is incentive for drivers to race up front and not lay back in the Feb. 26 season-opening race.

Coverage of the Daytona 500 is scheduled to begin at noon ET live on FOX.

Update: 7pm ET on Fox

It looks like the Daytona 500 will not start at 12 noon today since it looks like more rain.

Yeah, I got up at 4.00am our time this morning to watch, only to find it'd been delayed for seven hours.
Cheers, Pickles.

YELLOW FLAG NO. 1: Wow. Jimmie Johnson, Danica Patrck, Kurt Busch and others are involved in a crash going into Turn1. The wreck was triggered when Elliott Sadler shoved Johnson coming out of the trioval. David Ragan and Trevor Bayne were also swept up into the accident.

Kenseth holds off Earnhardt, wins bizarre 500

Kenseth holds off Earnhardt, wins bizarre 500 - Feb 28, 2012 - NASCAR.COM

QuoteQuote:
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The Daytona 500 has seen its share of shocking races over the years, but nothing that has come before — and likely nothing that occurs here again — will ever quite match what happened to the 54th running of Nascar’s premier Sprint Cup event.

First came the rain — causing the Daytona 500 to be postponed to Monday for the only time in its history. Then came the fire. A bizarre crash, even by auto racing standards, involving a racecar and a jet dryer truck led to a huge jet fuel fire across the track that seared the asphalt.

In a race already delayed 36 hours by rain, the fire caused a stoppage of two hours and five minutes. Throw in a trio of major wrecks at the end, and an extra two laps of racing had to be tacked on for a green-flag finish after all that had come before.

When it was finally, finally, finally done, Matt Kenseth was in victory lane. And the clock showed Tuesday morning.

“It feels great,” Kenseth said after earning $1.589 million for his second career Daytona 500 victory. He also won in 2009 in a race that was shortened by rain.

Marcos finished 13th that is great since he was caught up in that crash midway in the race. Tony Stewart finished 16th and Kyle Busch 17th.

Yeah, Marcos "The Likeable Aussie" (he is), as they call him, had a good week...he was right up the front for a long time.
I reckon I've seen better 500's than this one....very little overtaking, especially in the last twenty laps or so....I thought there'd be a little more "desperation" shown?
Cheers, Pickles.
