Republican presidential hopefuls have met the enemy ... it's themselves

QuoteQuote:
They stand up there, week after week, moving from state to state but somehow preaching to the same choir of angry whites, and it is as if Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich and even Ron Paul — the one who actually seems to say what he means — are running for the President of Podunk, not the United States.

You listen to them sometimes and get the idea all of them believe their audience is made up of people who still take Rush Limbaugh seriously, one more fringe group of the Republican Party acting as if the issue of contraception, in the year 2012, is somehow one on which the future of the republic hinges.

Here were the Republicans coming out of the midterm elections and looking stronger than the Marines, talking about how Obama was through before this campaign even began. They told the country that we were supposed to fear this President almost as much as we feared terrorism.

There were bogeymen everywhere, in the Middle East and in Obamacare and big government and the deficit and the bailout and the budget and, well, that just seemed like the short list. Decent people were supposed to fear all of that. Only you know what really scares the Republicans to death these days?

Their own candidates.

It's really bad. Out of all of them, only Ron Paul seems to have anything of interest to say. It's not good for democracy that the right cannot provide a candidate of substance, and they feel they have to pander to the ultra-social-conservative lunatic fringe...

Romney's struggles in the Christian Conservative South really points out the rift in the party.....or does it just point to his weakness as a candidate?

No it points to continued religious intolerance in America. Should it be seen as a weakness by the democrats or republicans that he is a Morman then they are nothing but bigots plain and simple.

Considering that Obama being a Muslim is considered a weakness by these same people, I suspect that bigots is close to the truth.

The main weakness to which I was referring is his inconsistency. In 2009 he writes in favor of the Mass. health plan, and says it can work for the entire country and should be supported. In 2012, it is radioactive. He's a formerly commendable moderate turned conservative. Who knows what his real position is on any issue? Then there are all the firing and Richie Rich comments....

OTOH, there is a good deal of bigotry as well.

All 3 of them are raging lunatics. NG is out and I'm thinking MR will take it via the numbers but if by some miracle Santorum makes it to the nomination I'm going to be physically ill. The thought of that man in the White House? It makes me shudder with utter revulsion. He's absolutely repulsive. That a proud bigot like Santorum could make it even this far just boggles my mind. If this is where America is going I don't think I can take it anymore....
