Quizzed by McCain's chief strategist Steve Schmidt on how she would react if Britain decided to withdraw its troops and support for operations in Iraq, Palin responded that she would "continue to have an open dialogue" with the Queen of England. When informed Queen Elizabeth II does not run Britain, Palin asks who does.

Schmidt has to tell her that the elected prime minister, then Gordon Brown, would be the one she would have to speak to about the UK's involvement in Iraq.

In an interview with the LA Times the real life Schmidt confirms the incident took place.
Sarah Palin Thought The Queen Ran Britain, According To New Film

QuoteQuote:
Any star worth her salt knows how to use the hype of a movie about her to call even more attention to herself after a relatively long absence. That’s why the reemergence of Sarah Palin in the middle of all the hype leading to Saturday night’s premiere of the much-anticipated movie “Game Change” was no surprise. Equally unsurprising was the nonsense she spouted with a straight face.

For instance, the 2008 vice presidential nominee, best-selling author, reality television star and Fox News contributor, appeared on “Hannity” last Thursday and complained that the media didn’t vet President Obama four years ago.

Frankly, the way Palin and the rest of the Baggers and Dominionists claim America should be run, they obviate the very principles by which we have any claim on not being lawful subjects of the British Crown.... (Even if the UK and their armed forces haven't been that way for a very, very, long time anyway.)

I saw the movie last night, and it seemed like a pretty good try at being fair. McCain comes off like the perfect statesman, with no hint whatsoever at the temper for which he was famous, and very little blame for the Palin issues. The infamous Palin family trip to Neiman Marcus is told mostly from the Palin side, without the observations heard from the staffers at the time about hillbillies on a shopping spree. Her charisma is played to the hilt.

However, her ignorance and thin skin are also highlighted. Given her answers in an unscripted setting, and her choice to serve only half her term as governor, these things follow completely. The staffers (who verify the accuracy of the film), like Schmidt, also come off pretty badly. They supported her choice for a job which might have put her in the Oval Office, without checking out whether she had the knowledge or temperament to do the job.

The other point which the film highlights is the very issue with which the GOP is grappling today--what to do with a small faction of the country which the Party generously calls "the base." The Republican Party has a proud history of leaders of the type McCain is portrayed to be in this film. Had McCain gone with his own instinct and picked Lieberman as his running mate, there would have been an historic moment of unity which would have made either candidate in 2008 an exciting choice for the entire country. Instead, his campaign chose to energize the same divisive, vocal minority that is still tearing the party and the country apart. The very sad and dangerous part is that a good part of this faction worships the very ignorance which this film highlights.

Um, technically, the Prime Minister of England still answers to the Queen. For year now her main job has been mostly acting as an ambassador of sorts now but she's not entirely powerless. Most of the day to day work is done by the PM, Parliament etc, but it's not exactly right to say she's just a figurehead. Her signature still signs off on a lot of things, mainly as a courtesy, but she still does influence state affairs to a degree. She has far less power now than say Queen Victoria but Queen Elizabeth can still make life very difficult for the PM and co if she chooses to. Elected officials they come and go, but she's in the job for life or until such a time as she chooses to abdicate in favor of an heir. Personally if I was in the PM's position I wouldn't assume too much with her. She's got an iron spine from what I can tell. She's far stronger than her children unfortunately.

The queens position is not to overtly get involved in politics, and she would certainly not be the person to call to discuss Iraq strategy.

I'm fairly certain that the basics of Britain's political structure was referenced in one of those magazines Sarah "read".

You mean all 1 of them. The only thing I've ever seen her "reading" was a publication of the John Birch Society.

If Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann were running for Pres and VP of this country (irrelevant who was running for which) we'd be better off electing my cat... She has more brains than both Sarah and Michelle put together.

Guys, we have 8 posts of the kind of bashing that the right complains about so strenuously right above this one. Can't we tone it down a bit so as to not hurt their little feelings?
Note: I am not disagreeing with the posts.
