That's because you don't live in Texas, where possessions are sacred and life is worthless.
My story: After my pocket was picked in Antigua Guatemala on Easter Sunday (he only got my wallet, not my P&S camera!) I followed the lead of some Old Guatemala Hands and started carrying an Ameribag, a shoulder-sling bag that's easily swung in front to be nestled in my arms if I feel crowd-nervous. One such Old Guate Hand showed me the secret of retaining such a bag in a land where slash-and-grabs are common: Run a steel cable through the strap. Also, keep valuables in the zippered inner pockets, not just loose the the bag where they'd fall out if the bag was slashed.
Just to be on the slightly-paranoid-but-safe side, I also ran a steel cable through my wide hippie camera strap. So my gear could be grabbed, but not slashed-and-grabbed. You'll see me walking about with the Ameribag over my shoulder and the K20D around my neck -- until I get nervous, like in a crowd or on a trafficked street. Then I swing the bag around front and rest the camera on or in it, all cradled in my arms. This doesn't leave much to be grabbed or slashed. I have suffered no losses since then.
A couple hours after my pickpocketing, I was watching a sacred procession down a crowded avenue, and I saw a pickpocket at work. He'd stand against a wall as if pissing on it, but eyeing the crowd. When a prospect was sighted he'd scurry over, blend with the crowd, mingle, pick a pocket, and return to his post at the wall, awaiting the next victim. I *knew* what he was doing. I *wanted* to strangle his scrawny neck.
But I didn't think the crowd would appreciate a big gringo stomping a wee little local. I didn't want to get an inside view of a Guatemalan jail. (In La Antigua, prisons are set up in earthquake-tumbled churches, and inmates get to rebuild the facilities during their stays.) And whipping out a pistol to shoot the little cockroach would definitely be the wrong move -- there's lots of firearms left over from the wars, and security guards have itchy trigger-fingers in a land where the national pastimes are baseball and armed robbery.
Don't shoot grabbers. Maintain situational awareness and don't get grabbed. Prevention is easy.
