BBC: Probe finds high radiation in damaged Fukushima reactor

QuoteQuote:
The operator of Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear plant has said damage to one of the reactors is much worse than previously thought.
...
On Tuesday workers managed to insert a probe into reactor number two for only the second time and found damage worse than expected.

Radiation was up to 10 times the fatal dose, the highest yet recorded at the plant. The level of water cooling the melted-down nuclear fuel was also far lower than expected.

YLE has it that there is only 60 cm of cooling water in #2, an earlier estimate was 10 m from the time 'the government declared it stable' (in Finnish, Fukushimassa mitattiin vaarallisia säteilyarvoja | Ulkomaat | YLE Uutiset | yle.fi ).

Ah, I remember the discussions when it was happening... Guess we weren't quite so 'alarmist' as some claimed, eh?

Not at all. The Japanese government and TEPCO were lying through their teeth then and they are still lying.

A brief comparison & contrast... Lucky for the world this is still not as bad as Chernobyl; which btw is still partially operative.

I can see this Japan facility eventually becoming a version of that, but also noting... There's a good portion of the area that has banned any type of farming, and for very good cause. The area should in fact be increased and should be permentantly banned from both farming; and better - from having anyone living there.

...And here in North america... did anyone catch the still adrift ghost ship? It may indeed be radioactive. The united states navy had to move over two dozen ships out of the area to avoid this same radiation problem. Also please remember the debris field; there's a strong probability it may also be radioactive to some extent.

Also in North america... Does anyone have any scientific data that supports how very minor levels of radiation have indeed reached here a while ago??

This incident far from over. I also connot stress how close this came to an incident far worse than Chernobyl.

If you understand German, you can always look at the actual situation here (with lots of maps and charts):

Startseite | GRS - Fukushima-Informationsportal

There are tons of links to the sources of the information (which are mostly in English or Japanese).

A brief compiling of all actual informations and measures by the Japanese government is put to a PDF document in English language; the link to the last published version is here (but this link will change with every update, actually it's from February 16th, 2012 ):

What I want to know, is that idiot who writes for The Register still claiming Fukushima was a triumph for the nuclear industry?

He.... freakin he..

QuoteQuote:
Nuclear engineer here to report in. So far this has been a fantastic success. A 40 year old reactor designed to withstand 7.9 earthquakes has basically survived a 9.1 with little to no damage to the environment.
The biggest radiation dose was a worker in/near containment that got a 10 rem dose. Minor radiation sickness is considered about 100 rems. So in otherwords, there has been no radiation sickness at all, and there will not be. The media has been absolutely ridiculous, blowing things way out of proportion. Read the official reports here, and trust nothing else basically.http://www.tepco.co.jp/en/press/corp...e/index-e.html

People who think nuclear is dangerous are friggin nuts. People need to be concerned with things that cause real damage, like earthquakes and tsunamis. Not a single person will die because of radiation sickness, I can promise you that. But so far the death count from the natural disasters are upwards of ten thousand. People need to focus on real issues, and not make fake crap up about 'nuclear dangers'.

Yes it is undertood this is in fact not a quote directly from JeffKrol, but...

I can't even believe that anyone even stated this in public.

Obviously that same person who made the original quote never quite heard of Chernobyl; something that is still one of the most highly classified events ever. The events in the (then) former Soviet Union set off radiation detectors all over the entire northern hemisphere - to quite interesting levels as well.

The general area of Chernobyl will not be able to support human habitation for many hundreds of years - yet strangely enough people still in fact work there; and are able to visit there for very limited amounts of time
