yes, i normally don't have a massive problem with auto or manual focus, the k5 is certainly better than the k20. Most times i don't get the results i want, it is down to me choosing the wrong settings or forgetting my tripod etc. Not sure what went wrong last night...as i said, i didn't have a canon or nikon shooter to hand to see what results they would have got! None of the shots i missed were critical, and i did manage some decent pictures. I was using a new lens, i have taken test shots indoors in low light wide open with it and have focused ok, last night was outside, with large areas of low contrast....i was using selectable focus point also, not just the centre point. Anyway, this is one of the better results from last night.

What do you miss about the K-5?
The K-5 has so many features in a smaller body. I do construction documentation and I don't need full resolution most of the time. When I'm not needing more than 16MP I'm missing my K-5.

Just switched to D600 - why, oh why, doesn't Pentax make a FF camera?!

I've got all of my Pentax gear listed in The Marketplace right now but I'm tempted to keep a core system out of some misguided loyalty and/or the size/weight advantage that Pentax offers. I owned a great Pentax rig back in the 80's and identify with them emotionally - Nikon just doesn't feel right to me for some reason but I'm sure I'll get over that feeling after awhile. The Nikon D800E and 70-200 VRII is sharper than anything I have by Pentax and it nails focus every time - my jaw still hits the ground when I see shots taken 'wide-open' with this combo. But I'm starting to think my Pentax gear may be more convenient as a walk-around combo (weight/size etc). If only they made a FF.......

I'm in the middle of listing all my Pentax gear on ebay atm, and using the money from selling my k-x, K5, Auto 110 and lenses as well as some inheritance I'll be buying a D800, a second hand D300, either a 24-70 2.4 or 24-120 4 as well as 50 and 85mm lenses to go with them. I was planning on keeping the K5 as my second body but it makes more sense to me to sell everything and swap over fully so I can use the same lenses on both.

I don't regret buying Pentax a few years ago as I've learnt a hell of a lot from the cameras and am now starting to earn money from my photography, but the difference in prices between the lenses is far less than before and the sheer convenience of not having to mail order everything, as well as the increase in DR and AF is something I will really be able to use now.

I haven't handled a D600 but it doesn't seem all that much smaller from this:

D600 v D800: Compare camera dimensions side by side

K-5 v D600: http://camerasize.com/compare/#378,187

K-5 V D800: http://camerasize.com/compare/#290,187

I was basing it on handling the 2 bodies.

I'm sticking with Pentax. I've never picked up another camera that felt so right in my hands, and I've never seen another brand with such intuitive controls. I like my gear just as it is, and I don't want anything else. I've had my Pentax film cameras since 2000 and my K-x since 2009. Just when I think I know everything about them I dig out the manuals, and find something new to experiment with.

I just bought a K-30 and am extremely happy with it, and the much improved autofocus. I now have a couple of WR lenses, I would have to drop a lot of cash to buy that in another system. I really don't care about a full frame, I'm not a pro selling extremely large prints that need a little more resolution. I keep reading on what an advantage it is to landscape photography, since you can get wider. Well, most of my landscapes are not shot that wide. I think Pentax will eventually make a full frame, but not for me. I understand that you can go to any store and buy Nikon, Canon, and to some extent Sony, but pretty much just the very low end items. I would still have to drive quite a ways to get their better equipment.

I am vested heavily in Pentax at the moment. I originally got into Pentax based on price / performance (K100D was my first). I love everything about it. The only real complaints is the AF - there are a number of wildlife shots I have missed with moving animals - that said I take some of blame as my settings may have not been optimal but when you are shooting landscapes and then a fox runs across your path, all I have time for is a quick shift to P mode and point and pray.

I could dump all my Pentax gear and get a decent starter FF kit with some of the other players , and I may at some point. I do this for a hobby and to date my gear meets and exceeds my needs and talents for that matter. If I ever get the point where I am limited by what I own , then I may consider a switch.
