Religious Sites are Worst for Malware

Religious Sites are Worst for Malware, Report Finds - Tech Europe - WSJ

Porn sites are much safer...

QuoteQuote:
The average number of threats found on religious sites was 115 (mostly fake antivirus software). By contrast, pornographic sites had less than a quarter, at around 25 threats per site. Of course, the number of pornographic sites is vastly greater than religious sites.

Malware can effectively be stopped in it's tracks.

Unfortunately many people insist on operating their computers in administrator mode - or settings that are perhaps a mirror of it. A secondary user account can easily be configured to easily avoid almost any type of malware - although also noting that nothing's quite perfect.

And here is my chance to name names... JAVA (I believe it is Oracle) is by far the largest security risk for any computer. If anyone out there is able to oerate their computer without it - then please do.

I've also found it depends upon the operating system. If one has W7, osx 10.7, or ny updated Linux - the very few problems will get through IF peoperly configured.

One also has to realize that; while security software does help somewhat...That something at that cost is only going to really include about eight out of ten real issues.Any software out there isn't quite as nice as a Barracuda firewall. Now if they could only fit that firewall into a tablet..

My personal thoughts...

1. Never use administrator mode except to do essential only updates - such as through ones operating system - perhaps only needing to check about twice a month or so.

2. Get rid of (or switch off) any and all unneeded software - naturally including java.

3. Do a version of system restore about every week or so, and do frequent back-ups of everything.

4. Only use WiFi with proper encryption; anything less than N and you'll might as well be broadcasting to the entire world. Even the average junior high school student can hack (**completely**) anything less than N in minutes. You also might even want to conisder upgrading to WiFi AC when it becomes available.

5. Never open any attachment and also link directly

What exactly is "N" encryption? 802.11n is a standard for implementing wireless local area network computer communication, know commercially as Wi-Fi since 1999. Wi-Fi has three security methods. WEP, broken easily years ago, WPA and WPA2. Both WPA methods have vulnerabilities. The only way to secure WPA is to turn off Wi-Fi Protected Setup.

Also JAVA is far from the biggest security risk. That would be Flash, simply because far more computers have it installed and far more websites use it.

The biggest security risk isn't Java. It's the user.

Java may have holes in it (as does anything complex enough to be worthwhile), but it isn't he worst thing about making a computer secure... As the computer support saying goes: PEBKAC...
