I wouldn't get too excited about the federal prospects of the left in Canada.
Canada is a left leaning country ruled by the right through an out dated electoral system. After the hammering, glaoting, misuse of power ALberta has gotten away with the last few years under Harper, Mulclair can take the next election without a single Alberta seat, and may well do that. Harpers neglect of the Ontario industrial sector while promoting oil pipe lines that just keep breaking etc. is going to see him wiped out in the East. People gave him the benefit of the doubt last time because he was minority. SInce elected he promoted billions in military spending, spending on jails and other frills while ignoring core Canadian projects like infrastructure and the manufacturing sector etc. Alberta will very soon find themselves once again the red haired orphan of Canada. The benefit of power based in Alberta seems to only benefit Alberta. That could be said of the east too, but the east has more voters. You'd be crazy if you think the rest of Canada hasn't noticed. In the mean time Rob Ford the mayor of Canada's largest city, has so discredited the right in Ontario, he's done what no left winger could ever have done. Make the Canadian right look like lunatics. That's just not fair to the right.. but, what in politics is fair?

Well said Norm. Harper does his future no favours either by burying crap in huge omnibus bills rather than splitting it into smaller bills allowing for better parliamentary discussion. the next couple of days are going to be really long for the Government
many many confidence votes. Not that any will take them down, but they better be whipping their team pretty hard or it could happen on a late night vote (wouldn't it serve them right arrogant b*stards)

French President Francois Hollande's Socialist Party has won enough seats in parliamentary elections to form an absolute majority.

With final results still to be declared, the Socialists look set to win between 313 and 315 of the 577 seats in the National Assembly.

But former President Nicolas Sarkozy's UMP has seen its share fall from 304 to an estimated 214 seats.

It gives the president strong backing for his tax-and-spend programme.

These results mean the Socialists will not have to rely on the support of the Greens or far left to push through their plans to hire more public workers and refocus EU fiscal efforts away from their emphasis on austerity.
