Oops forgot to add... The movie distributors often set the prices of the film; based on market, time of day, etc...

But even top ten productions now (for year 2011 even) still make it to Blu-ray and some cable within two months. Some hotels (Times Square NYC) also show the same movies that are in the theaters presently

I only rarely go to the big multiplexes but they have several tiers of pricing in Canada. 2D $12.99, 3D$15.99, imax$1999, UltraAVX 3D $17.99. then they get fancy in one theater where they have more of a private cinema, small luxurious, licensed and with a waitress. $19.99 but they don't show 3D in those so a $7 premium

I wait and see it at the Local rep house which has upgraded everything so it can deal with digital and 3D. membership is $10 a year, 1 movie $7, double feature $10, snack bar is at least 40% cheaper than the big chains and better too. and once in a while they run some great old stuff on the big screen (I'll be going to see restored versions of Rear window and North by North west one night later in the month, and a few nights later what has to be the strangest double feature ever, Breakfast at Tiffanys and Clockwork Orange
I have a decent enough home theater (after 25 years in that industry it was hard not to) but nothing for me beats an old school theater
