Great shot, Steve. I'd actually forgotten that Studebaker made trucks. I haven't forgotten the Avanti, however.

Cobra seen at a recent car show - not sure if it's genuine or a replica, but it's nicely done.
Rims, roll bar and rear view mirror aren't OEM 427SC, I don't think, nor hood air opening. 1007 frame numbers were produced (not counting authentic 90's continuations with Kirkham bodies) and something like 815 are extant. They're about $500,000 restored and substantially more not restored. Growing up, my next-door neighbor had a 427 Street, which he barrel-rolled at the corner at 3:00 am. I was 13 - my first real encounter with death. I know of 3 more 427's, and a 289 Street still owned by the original owner.

Thanks for the info. Yes, I'm hearing that "real" Cobras are extremely scarce!

Scarce enough that you are not likely to see one at a strip mall show n shine.

Still, the repro versions are nice sports cars. I have ridden in a few, and had the opportunity to drive one on a road course once.

Fast.

Fun.

Powerful.

Just point, mash the loud pedal, and hang on..

I saw a Cobra replica at a car show this summer with the turbo Buick V6, like from a Grand National. That engine is pretty short so it left a fair amount of room under the hood and probably decent weight distribution. I can't decide if it was a good idea. I always figured the 289 would be enough, and certainly today you could get enough power from a Mustang powerplant. The originals only weigh what, 2400 pounds - current Mustang is 3700.

Something a bit less exotic - 1966 Olds Cutlass 442. I've always liked these, but don't remember seeing a lot of these older ones around, even in the regular Cutlass configuration. The '68s and newer seemed more in abundance.

Yeah, I think the Pontiac and Chevy were more popular, but from a vintage review, it seems the 442 would actually be the one I wanted, best handling, apparently.

I don't think these cars were reknowned for their handling, but the Olds might have an edge on the other makes.

Something maybe a bit more commonly seen - '56 Chevy 210 Coupe:

Yeah, none of them would be what you'd call *great* so 'edge' might be the right word, but it was actually interesting to see the old article. The Olds actually came with front *and* rear sway bars, and I think stiffer springs, though, and that can make a huge difference with cars that age. One of the first things I did for my old Duster as a kid, actually, that and Direct Connection shocks.

A small block Ford V8, like a 271 HP/289 K code would be nice, but it's hard to go wrong with the 90 degree Buick 3.8 liter V6, especially turbocharged. I'm a Buick fan...strike that from the record...an all encompassing automotive/motorcycle enthusiast.

One of our vehicles has the normally aspirated, 90 degree Buick V6, one of the reasons we bought it in the first place. Lot's of punch, smooth and dead reliable and durable...all this in a comfortable, quiet 6 passenger sedan.

I'm older now and comfort has become ....important. ...although I still like a large, powerful sedan.

I've never been able to figure out how do share images, even though both my kids tried to show me how it's done. The car I've talked about is a 2007 Buick Allure, which is known as a LaCrosse in the USA. It's a nice, quiet, large old man's car.

Here you go in black!!! Haven't really noticed those before - not in Australia - look like a large Jag. We have Holden Statesman that fill that niche.

That's it...ours is dark garnet red. In addition to the 90 degree V6, another thing that attracted us is the front end design... headlights are a bit fluted...similar style to one of the Jaguar models.

In the 80s I worked for a car rental company. US manufacturers were just starting to wake up and redesign then, and rental cars were hardly the leading edge of car tech, but the occasional decent effort really stood out. The company had 82 and 83 Buick LeSabres when I started, cushy rear-drive boats with 305 V8s. I remember the vivid difference when they got the replacement Buicks with the fuel-injected 3.8 V6 and front wheel drive. Horsepower numbers did not show the difference in responsiveness. Of course, today, even the bottom of the market gets that kind of power and young persons have no frame of reference for "slow".
