Okay, Jeff. I can put up with a lot. Liberal rhetoric, Tea Party insanity, bash this/bash that; but if you start bad mouthin' Clint there's gonna be trouble!

I think they chose him because of his outspoken stance against gay marriage. He did get a lot of support when he made a public statement regarding it.

No, that's fine. He's old, and rich. I said "If you start" (future tense).

He is pro choice and pro gay marriage. I wonder if that will be in his speech?

Do they really want to start a battle of Hollywood endorsements?

I really find it depressing when actors get into political endorsements, and it is especially bad at a convention of insiders. Hearing political views from Clint or Alec or others just gets in the way of seeing them in character.

I've seen the Clint Eastwood speech now. Much will be made about his rambling improv with the chair, and the throat-cutting gesture, but although clearly befuddled, he came across a lot more genuine than anyone else I've seen taking the stand at the RNC.... especially that grinning, asinine haircut they call Mitt.

Talking of actors, I was surprised to see Jon Voight foaming at the mouth (squealing like a pig?) on Sky News yesterday, about the 'left wing media conspiracy'.

A rather bizarre choice, IMHO. One bastion of support to the Republican Party are gun owners. Yet despite his many gun toting films, Clint is an anti gun hypocrite who believes only he and few select others should be allowed to own them.

Isn't that a slight exaggeration of Clint's position?

He doesn't seem anti-gun at all, just pro some common sense measures like the Brady Bill. Perhaps being in all those 'gun-toting films' gives him a clear perspective on Hollywood fantasy vs reality...

IN the bizarre American mind set, measures like the Brady bill are anti-gun. Are driver's licenses anti-car? You have to really stretch yourself to understand it. Ac tually you can't understand it. You just have to accept that that's the way it is. it's neither defendable nor logical.

No exaggeration at all. I've seen other posts on him and even a quote from him:

"I have a very strict gun control policy: if there's a gun around, I want to be in control of it."
- Clint Eastwood

More Clint:

PRESS: Clint Eastwood, we're going to jump into politics, but first I want to come back here for just a second on guns. It's going to be a big issue in this campaign year. Big difference between Bush and Gore on this issue. I just want to ask you about -- there are three things in front of the Congress: background check at gun shows, mandatory trigger locks and licensing handguns. Would you support those three measures?

EASTWOOD: Yes, I've always supported a certain amount of gun control. I don't -- I think California has always had a mandatory waiting period, so we were never concerned about it like the rest of the country. Some states didn't have any at all. So I've always supported that. I think it's very important that guns don't get in the wrong hands, and, yes, I would support most of that. I don't know too much about trigger locks. I've never really discussed that with anyone. But I do feel that guns -- it's very important to keep them out of the hands of felons or anyone who might be crazy with it.

PRESS: So what do you say -- I don't know whether you're a member of the NRA or not. But what do you say to your friend Charlton Heston, who opposes all three, opposes any gun control measures?

EASTWOOD: Well, I don't agree with him on that, if that's his position.
