I reckon the right approach is to make an approach. Don't shy away and then for the next 30 years, wonder what might have been.
But maybe that's just me........

Regards

Exactly - and just be yourself!
Yep. Just introduce yourself (if that's necessary) and ask her.

You guys I will update once that class hits again, which is Wednesday. I am hoping she will say yes to be my partner and laugh about the joke.

It's either:

A. Hi, this is crazy, but I just met you, and my last partner is psychotic. So work with me maybe? (Kind of hypocritical since I am taking anti-psychotics, but you get the idea =P)

B. Hi, my last partner was a psychopath, I was hoping you can save me by partnering up next time?

I don't see anything wrong with: "Hey, I'm Dave. How do you think this class is going?" Any reasonable response can be followed with "Can we partner on this next assignment?" If she saw the earlier event, she'd understand that you have at least one reason for the request. If she's used a mirror lately, she can probably think of another. In any case, you can allow her to make the inferences. No need to spell it out. Anything that explicitly compares her to an unstable guy with anger management issues may not be seen as much of a compliment, if you get my drift ....

OTOH, if your initial question does not get a reasonable response, like she smacks you upside the head with her tripod, you may check into how to get your fees back - it's just not your class.

Just do it! Many years ago I knew a really homely guy who always had a sharp date for the weekend. When questioned he said (and I am cleaning this up), "I just say Hi and I think your are a doll. I would like to take you to dinner and then .................. your brains out." He said he got his faced slapped 9.8 times out of ten but the .2 was a sure thing.

And then the power sales presentation says they don't really mean no until they have said it 7 times.

So just do it. A no won't kill you.

Edit: I want to be clear the power sales presentation part only applies to asking for a date and not anything else. I just don't want anyone to misunderstand.

Re' the video: Thanks for the eggsplanation but the yoke at the end was a little too free range for me. ;-)

Re asking the 'cute' girl to partner in lighting class: . The word 'cute' does give away your real motivations.. no wonder you're scared ;-)

You guys I got the perfect plan. I am writing a note card that says Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy, but my last partner was a psychotic. So work with me, maybe? I am going to sit down next to her when class starts and hand her the note.

These look more like suggestions for pickup lines here.
Are you more interested in dating her or just partnering in class?

IMO you are getting way ahead of yourself on this.
What if she turns you down? How will you feel for rest of your class sessions?
What is she tells your former partner you called him a psychotic?

IMO an honest, direct unembellished approach works best with anyone worthwhile.
How about "Can we partner for this or an upcoming class session?"
No explanations, no stories, no clever lines are necessary.

Maybe I'm old, but if it's pop culture, and I know anything about it, it means it's been played. Be original and funny if/when you can, but always be genuine. Play it cool man, don't try so hard, she'll notice that you're trying to impress her. Just be yourself, you'll be less nervous that way. This is partners first, see where it goes later. Don't be too disappointed if she says no, for whatever reason, she may already have a partner she likes working with.
