Ms Vermeulen said four of the injured were taken to hospital by ambulance. None of the injuries are believed to be serious.

The cause of the collision is being investigated.

The two trams were line 9 and line 11 ! Creepy, isn't it?

I think this happened in my town 2-3 times during the last 50 years. About the injuries: these have to be expected even if the speed is less than 10 km/h; people standing may fly through half of a waggon.

Besides the driver sleeping, it may happen if there is (unexpectedly) oil or lots of water on the rails.
In Frankfurt all trams do have additional magnetic slipper brakes. But using these at walk speed would lead to an immediate stop - the waggon would stay undamaged, but the effect on passengers would be about the same as with the collision.

EDIT: But this happens so seldom the news was on the websites of most European television stations.

I haven`t watched TV today because my AV receiver broke down and spend the afternoon trying to locate the problem.
